In the late 1980s, I was introduced to a self-styled Satanic high priestess. She called herself a witch and dressed the part, with flowing dark clothes and black eye shadow around to her temples. In our many discussions, she acknowledged worshipping Satan as his “queen.”
I’m a man of science and a lover of history; after studying the classics at Princeton, I trained in psychiatry at Yale and in psychoanalysis at Columbia. That background is why a Catholic priest had asked my professional opinion, which I offered pro bono, about whether this woman was suffering from a mental disorder. This was at the height of the national panic about Satanism.

I have some of my own thoughts about this extent of evil, but it is probably too early in my experience to have any kind of certainty about my hypotheses. As a traveler on the paths of the spirit, I have encountered evil...not by way of my own desire to do so, but rather out of a desire to try to help folks who came to me asking for my help. And I hafta say this, at least: My encounters with so-called "evil" seemed almost like a game that some entity was playing with me. If you ask me why humans are made to suffer, at this juncture in my experience I would hafta say: Because they take themselves too damned seriously. So how do we stop taking ourselves so seriously? Well, that is a subject I am devoting a major part of my life to try to answer for myself.

And also btw, I believe it is not possible to seriously explore human evil without encountering and successfully coming to peace with the evil within our own souls. :)

A Catholic asking if worshiping a being that can not be proven is a "mental disorder". That is rich by his own logic he is also sick. No disrespect to Christians.

I hung around with some people like this women in my youth. What people call "Satanism" can be divided into two categories. Those who are really atheist like who pick Satan to worship because he is the most anti-Christian symbol possible but they do not believe a being named Satan exists. He is just a good symbol of being your own person and thinking for yourself which is something Christianity does not allow. You will do as you are told when you are told. Because he stood up to god and said no I will do this my way, be my own king, and I will know the truth of the world he is a role model.

Then there are the people like this women who acknowledge Satan to be real and make pacts with him. It is true if you really wish to contact such things you can. Prior to learning this I was more in the category listed above. Being this way was really just a way to assert my independence and not a religion. It is and you can't always get rid of what you let into the world. I grew tired of it and the people around me did not.

I could feel the toxicity of these things feeding off me. That is the arrangement you are giving part of yourself to allow them to exist on this plane. And they like anger and sadness you are supposed to create it for them. They feed off this stuff like you and I would feed on a sandwich. Something like war is fantastic for them. All those people killing and disliking each other. Maybe because I soon realized I was not like my friends is why I didn't get the effects they did. They gained what they thought of as power I grew physically weak. It was not the full on control you see in the movie the Exorcist but I knew something was with me it just allowed me to be me for it's own devices.

I was eventfully able to get rid of them and anger them by not creating what I was supposed to and doing a separate ceremony but the whole experience taught me a lesson.

    Astute point. :)

It's so easy to fall into the trap of Orthodoxy as Truth - even if your "orthodoxy" is a form of anti-orthodoxy. ;)

It's easier to trust an "authority's" version of "truth" than to travel the scary roads that lead to personal truth.

if someone thinks a thing is real, it can certainly be real to them, and have more of the same effects then most people realize, as if it were. there may even be nonphysical things we create by what we convince each other to believe. this is one reason i question the wisdom of doing so. i'm not saying there can't be real things people think are demons or call that, just that if there are, they have nothing to do with people doing so, nor very likely, what they think they know about it.

evil is what we do when we choose to cause harm. really has nothing to do with what anyone believes or even what unknown or invisible things might exist.

True...but where does the subconscious come in? You say, "...when we choose to cause harm..." But sometimes folks are not AWARE of choosing. This is not to say we do NOT choose - cuz we do. Yet we sometimes hide this act of choosing from our conscious awareness. Well, actually I would say, rather than "sometimes" - a LOT of times.

And isn't this a major source of evil? This tendency to hide our own evil from our conscious awareness, so that it appears to our own selves that we are innocent?

Satan is simply an embracement of Nature and Pagan values. Satan is simply refusing to accept the dogmatic false reality and hypocrasy brainwashed upon your peers. Satan is the fountain of knowledge, pleasure, beauty, and wisdom. But he is not hedonism, nor his he chaos. Quake 3 is a structured game, it is an arena, Quake 3 is satanic, and beautiful, GTA is a chaos, without true harmony, GTA is a hedonism for the manimals and beasts.
