When it comes to Worldwide appeal there are barriers to overcome. The British sense of humour like that of other countries succeeds in it's own unique quirkiness, and translating it across 'any' water can see difficulties in understanding/appreciating it. (I'm still somewhat bemused at 'a very peculiar practice' which although I liked was a bit weird!}; Also, series like Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones, Green Wing. Father Ted and Early Doors, owed a lot of their success to the fact to their shortish 2-3 series runs (leave 'em wanting for more') - With Spitting Image, The New Statesman and Just Good friends being 'right for their time' Still with the longevity of Fools and Horses, Outnumbered and Summer wine - along with the re-vamping over time of 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' I guess one can say yep - us Brits can knock out a good comedy or .... several ((Apologies to the many more not mentioned))
Nice one. Liked it! I'm not too familiar with British comedy, but I do enjoy some of the shows that they showed here. Like....Only Fools and Horses, Allo Allo, Oh Doctor Beeching, You Rang M'Lord, Yes Minister, Absolutely Fabulous, Fawlty Towers.... Keeping Up Appearances has its moments too. But what Brits do best is mystery and crime. Midsomer Murders, Lewis, Hinterland, Inspector Morse, Endeavour, Father Brown, even Grantchester. And the one and only David Suchet as Poirot. Broadchurch omg. Plus those mini series like Code of a Killer for example....or those based on Minette Walters' novels (I don't like her as a writer, but the shows are pretty good). I find them all better than that generic Hollywood crap, because every show has a unique charm to it. One evening a week is reserved for British crime, love it.
Not comedy related, but recently I've been very much into British shows like Edwardian farm, Victorian farm, The Edwardian Country House, The 1940s House, The Victorian Pharmacy.... Very interesting, and educational too.
Minder was a comedy-drama that ran for 15 years. Quite popular in Australia. Many Australians found the London colloquialisms to be amusing. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078657/
/\ /\ Bit of an odd statement to make if it is so bad? - I mean how would one know - unless - one watches it? What exactly is so bad now? Seems to me, humour is based on being Topical and New, for generations change as does the type of humour which is 'popular' for the recipient/s of such British humour, is designed for British audiences - and anything else= a bonus

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxEau3xvbUk I loved growing up and watching The Benny Hill Show in the states. I could barely wait for the show to come on at 1am. It was my soft porn show at 10 years old, not to mention incredibly funny. I still remember all the good times humping my pillow and laughing hysterically. (Just not at the same time...lol)
Back in the day - deemed as funny, now .... PC? = a line crossed? (There were some good moments) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rC668eNa0oI
^^well there's a blast from the past. Barely remember this, I'm sure I used to watch this as a kid. Next week sees the return of Burnistoun for a Xmas special, very funny Scottish sketch show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qAugcz9LCI
