I often have dreams where I am hovering above the ground. I try but can never attach myself to the ground. I can float as high I want to the point that I have been in the clouds. When I am going up it's always so real I can feel the wind. I've only tried to fly high a few times in somewhat lucid states,. I say somewhat because I knew it was a dream but I was not able to control things as much as others seem to. Usually not being attached is stressful because I feel like I need to get someplace.

I wonder if this is literally my "soul" or whatever you want to call it having some sort of limitations not being in physical form. But it's not physical my body is also not in the place my mind is so why would it be like that?

I used to have dreams where I could float weightlessly, back when I was much younger. But for some reason, it was always indoors. Not that I seemed to mind. I was having fun in the dreams, trying to control my ascent so that I could bump into the ceiling. They were nice dreams... I don't seem to have nice dreams like that anymore.

that's how mine usually are too. i know i'm dreaming in a majority of my dreams, but i rarely have the control that most people claim to when they talk about lucid dreaming.

floating is not that unusual for me. unlike you, i've never wanted to touch the ground in such a dream. i can always get around while i'm floating anyway, just not always as efficiently as i would like. and i can't usually float infinitely high; if anything i tend to sink and i have to work a bit to stay afloat, a bit like swimming.

I rise above the ground by working my legs like a bicycle in my dreams. The faster I work my legs the higher I go. To get back to the ground I cycle slower and go back down.

I have recurring dreams where I fly like a bird, but not floating. It always takes place in my parents neighbourhood and I run down the hill with my arms out and sort of just catch the wind under them. The end of their street is a forest in my dreams though so once I'm down the hill I fly over and around the trees for a while. A few times I flew downtown after taking off though. Those ones were weird because normally it's just to the forest.

I used to float about 15 feet above the ground sometimes when dreaming. I could move forwards or backwards by leaning in the direction I wanted to go. There were always earth-bound creatures snapping at me from below trying to get me. They never did. I haven't dreamed that since I was young.

I've dreamed of both floating in the air and flying. Seemed perfectly natural in the dreams.

I don't remember much of anything about my dreams, but an ability to float has been part of many of them.

no often but yes. i usually teleport or ride some form of public transportation. but floating, usually from some elevated point to begin with and then out across mid air, to some other elevated point of the same hight or lower.
i don't recall doing this at any time recently, but there's a degree of randomness that of course any element can happen in some next dream at any time.
i have no problem getting down with this occurs, but gaining altitude is difficult and extremely unusual for me.

I've done it and was trying to figure out how so I could do it later and thought for sure I got it down but then it wasn't happening when I got up. 'the reason I thought I could figure it out is because I could feel weight. control surface

there was a dream once where i was wearing a fursuit that had wings, and they actually worked like a kind of hang glider. that only happened once, and i know is a completely different kind of a thing,
it was kind of a fun dream though, and lots of different things went on in it. would probably make a good story if i ever remember to think about getting around to actually writing it.

this was a totally different thing, then any of the other kind of dreams i've had with floating in them. i'm pretty sure its been years since i've had either.

I did all that floating thing in past dreams so I tend to mainly walk in my dreams now or use elevators instead, they seem to be quite a dominant feature in some dreams. I used to have some amazing dreams in the past, where I would find myself floating around all sorts of strange places, usually this took place in very large buildings of some kind although I can't remember what they were unfortunately. I seem to remember a buzzing sound associated with some of those floating dreams to, so my guess is those kind of dreams were something more than just an ordinary dream. I know what an out of body experience feels like, so I'm inclined to think that some of those dreams could have been something to do with that.

i've had some hum dingers with elevators in them. several featured elevators that were themselves a bit strange. most were one offs, (including a rickity, not too stable looking or feeling freight elevator, up the outside of an old department store, other times, often freight or other non-public elevators), but there is one building, i've revisited multiple times, a very large hotel casino megastructure, in which the elevators are on gymbols and travel not only virtically but in all directions, following a kind of track. structures often figure prominently, sometimes very old houses with hidden or abondond stairways, or partially deconstructed and being rebuilt or remodeled. and all of these sorts of things figure more prominently then people of any kind, who i seldom meet directly, nor, play very much of a role in them. the ones in which i've floated, the floating often 'launched' from the top or roof of a building of some kind. in fact, i don't recall any in which it did not do so. no falling. just floating strait out and level from wherever it started.

Thanks for your interesting post, you just reminded me there when you said rickety old lifts and tracks, they were a part of my previous dreams to. In fact when I had the floating dreams I can remember moving along sharply winding tracks inside a large building that could have been a shopping mall when I come to think of it. I was moving at great speed and then towards the ends of these tracks lifting up into the air and going into floating mode. Those rickety old lifts were a nerve racking experience they shot up from ground level at a great rate of speed and seemed to travel for a very long time before coming to a sudden stop. I remember being only too glad to get out of them, after that the only problem was, I knew I had to get back in them again to go back down to ground level. I tried to follow some stairs going down instead to avoid the lifts but I always ended up getting back on a lift because the stairs would suddenly come to an end. In fact I can remember once I was walking across a roof and finding a ladder which I tried to go climb instead, I can't remember what happened after that though. I wish I could have those kind of dreams again, only this time I would catalogue them in my dream book.
I can remember having dreams in color at some stage, but unfortunately not recently enough to remember any.

i don't think i've ever had a dream that wasn't complete virtual reality. not just as clearly focused as everyday life, but color, all the senses, and everything worked. except of course, that often things work strangely. teleporting when not intending to. things around you transforming even as you watch or try to approach them. steps you can't retrace because things change behind you as you go. and yet, this doesn't always happen either. there are things like bus and train routes that go reliably to the same places. though those places themselves might change substantially every time you visit them. well that's what happens in mine.
and i can't say there aren't exceptions to everything in them, just that's what usually does. but i really can't remember ever having dreamed in black and white, or without everything being visually perfectly clear.
lots of tunnels and mysterious stairways and construction sites, wilderness too. i guess because i didn't grow up in cities. but did grow up riding lots of public transportation. more so then television. and the internet didn't exist yet.

The dream seems to relate to a lack of control, or maybe two conflicting needs; the need to maintain control and the need to rest and release control.
