Binge Drinking In The Uk

Well we hear a lot about this in the media...and always hear the Government whittling on about it and how the price of booze should go up to try and prevent the problems that come with binge drinking.....But that is totally unfair on the ones of us who can binge drink...and not cause anyone any problems and just go home quietly and crash out.......I personally have never been arrested cos of drink...or never been admitted to hospital cos of it either...I have been arrested for protesting against animal cruelty and building on a natural flood plain and meadow...but never cos i was drunk.....I enjoy a good drink...I love the pub culture and feel that the few buzzwollocks who go out and cause all the problems when they drink should be the ones to suffer...not us good drinkers...or the pubs......There seems to be so much anger round sometimes...and mixed with booze it aint good for some folk......So save are binge drinking culture and save our pubs :rastana:

 

I feel the same as you. I mean I can get drunk and have fun, get loose and still not be a fuckhead like most others. I have really been staying away from the young generation as of late. They're all fucking idiots and living in this kind of town where there's not much to do other than snow in winter and mountain bike in summer, all the tourists come here and drink themselves stupid but especially like 18-23 year olds, they're the worst.

Not too sure how I'd have been looking back and reflecting, but I never once got in trouble with police or got into a fight either. Maybe an argument or two.. I dunno. But I agree.

Aside from the problems of aggression and violence, binge drinking also has severe detrimental health effects.

There are now many people in the UK in their 30's with liver damage, where previously it would be people aged 40-50+

I have tailed off my drinking now, it does amount to self-abuse when drinking regularly to excess.

If booze is expensive its telling people its important, and its something you should be sure you have funds for. So as a kid, I always made sure I had the cash for booze. Then when I could easily afford it, it didnt have so much cachet.

People who cant afford booze will just take drugs instead.

If someone had actually given me a good case NOT to binge drink, and given me more alternatives, I'd never have started binge drinking.

I think it comes down to personal responsibility. The fact that some people take a drug too far does not mean that drug should be off limits to everyone. But as an American I have noticed the UK loves its drink. We do too but you guys take it to a new level.

 

Being (theoretically) one of those "young idiots", and having come to the UK for my studies so being from another country, I can say that when I first moved here I was actually shocked at the binge drinking culture. I enjoy having a glass or more with friends from time to time, but drinking just to be f**ed and just for the sake of it is insane and has become socially acceptable here. I really think it's a big issue and should be addressed, not by taxes but by education. People here go crazy as soon as they get to university because they were never allowed to drink anything before / too protected. In France having a small glass of wine is totally allowed even when you are underage (I am not saying 10, but once you are 15 or so our parents allow it), and that makes all the difference because it is not a taboo thing and we don't feel we need to go crazy once we get to uni.
When I lived in York, two students died only a couple of months apart - both drunk and fell in the river. They blamed the river and security around it, which I found ridiculous and hypocritical. The problem lies not in a river which people normally know how to deal with, but with drinking so much you are a danger to yourself and others.

 

Im afraid binge drinking is pretty much a global issue now,not just a UK one.I think the pressure of living in todays world is too much for the younger generation,and they have to numb/blot out reality by getting pissed most weekends.Pretty sad when you think about it.I know in my home country,its rife,as is the drug Ice which is getting way out of control unfortunately.

I'm a UK binge drinker, although I'm now starting to slow down. It isn't worth the cost or hangover, I'm also really not into those generic clubs where it is most common. I don't think I've ever drunk without the intention of becoming drunk, if only mildly. I enjoy the effects but not the taste.

 

"Britons are the worst binge drinkers in Europe." - I'm sorry but I think you'll find we're actually the best.
