Here is a commentary on the way guilt holds people back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhOIoCRVce0

Now here is my question, how did hippies back 30 or 40 minutes ago view the concept of guilt? Was it something never mentioned? Did some people say it was a negative force or was it applied to society and individuals to get them to question "sins" and then try to make them better.

My personal opinion is that guilt is primarily a bad emotion and only drains our soul energy and limits our creativity.

This feels very pertinent to me today as I am trying to give up alcohol and broke down this morning and had half a bottle of vodka. Now I feel terrible, depressed and just want to die.

My mum was a hippy and brought me up in a very haphazard wayward style.I became something of a wild child and ended up doing some bad shit.I have much remorse and guilt to work through.I'm trying to let it go.

I think it's worthwhile trying to be a good person because this will ultimately make you happier.I think a lot of it goes back to Freud's conception of the reality/pleasure principle. The reality principle is what society teaches you what you have to do to operate within acceptable norms and function as an acceptable member of society. The pleasure principle is what you might want to do to satisfy your instinctual desires and satisfy your lust do whatever pleases you.I spent a lot of time following the latter path.I think it is good to try and follow some kind of personal moral code, but too much guilt and remorse will fuck you up and just introject your complexes and lead to a perpetual downward spiral,a circle of self defeat. So I suggest forgive yourself and be kind to yourself.

I'm sure there are many hippies experiencing guilt 30 or 40 minutes ago...

So how have things been working?

Yes, if one beats themselves up (that is what society teaches us to do, right?) whenever we fail at a goal then it appears to take us on a continual downward spiral. Best to look at what makes us stronger and more happy and chip away the guilt aspect. We will treat ourselves and others better if we do.

I always hear catholics talking about good old catholic guilt. Nothing like saying "Jesus is watching you" to make someone feel horrible for what they did.

Doesn't guilt suggest that you behaved in a way that is untrue to who you really are?

I'm glad I saw this video. It seems, to me, that guilt is worth consideration and investigation.

I was raised in a kinda conservative, catholic home. There was definitely a lot of focus on right and wrong in my upbringing. A lot of things just started making sense.

Was about to.add my 2 million dollars, then I saw that.

(Everyones elses 2 cents is 2 million dollars for me as my advice is far more valueable ;) )

Dont think Ive really ever experienced guilt, not that I ever drowned small puppies when i was younger, but anything involving my penis, never experienced guilt.

Pyschopath is too strong, but apparently 5% of the population are sociopaths......

what many people don't know is not all psychopaths are mass murderers.....many people are psychopathic and deal with it without committing crime.

i confess I didn't watch the video because as usual there is no competent synopsis ...

but guilt is guilt...don't matter why

vg....I have never felt pecker guilt either....but I have done tons of stuff under ''guilty pleasure''......ive felt plenty guilty about the massive piles of cocaine I ingested in the 80s-90s

Guilt is good in small doses for Humans, It keeps us on the level. Example if you feel guilty for knocking someones mailbox over on the way to school, good guilt, you realized it was wrong so hopefully you don't next time.

Guilt, seems like it was created by Religion, for Religious, non violent, psychological punishment.

Sometimes, Guilt seems like a byproduct of self awareness. I am sure the Lion feels no guilt for killing and eating the baby Gazelle while mom and pop Gazelle watch on..

guilt is like any other emotion. It can run your life if you let it, but on the other end of the spectrum if you don't ever feel guilt then...well, for one you're probably a sociopath but also, you'll never learn from your mistakes or grow as a person.

emotions should all be approached with a Zen like attitude. Feel them, learn from.them, let them go. Dont wallow.
