Hardcore, loyal Gaga fans have known for years that she could sing absolutely anything at a very high quality level, based on old rare footage that we tracked down online, and on her educational background. Now everybody knows. She's spent the last year proving that she's the best jazz singer on the planet, and Sunday night, she nailed the highlights of the "Sound of Music" soundtrack. At the end, she got an emotional hug from Julie Andrews, who was being honored for the fiftieth anniversary of the movie's release.

To be absolutely fair and honest, the arrangement of "Climb Every Mountain" used by Gaga is like the one used in the middle of the movie, not the one used in the final scene, where Julie Andrews ends on a high note that is half an octave higher. No serious music critic is going to complain about this.

She proves herself as "the best singer in jazz" and sings these standards well, yet she makes formulaic, poppy electronic music. I'm looking at this more from that angle, that electronic production is not as easy as it may seem.

Rihanna too, the public might get sidetracked with silly videos and marketing stunts, but most of them dont get to the top in the first place unless they have talent, girl can sing

I'm a fan of Ariana Soy Latte Grande as well, even though she seems to be a total rag in person, girl can sing

PS: Even though it was a big hit, I think Gaga ripping off a Madonna song in Born this way damaged her whole vibe, for those past 35 anyway, every time I hear it I just wanna sing the Madge version - 'Dont go for second best bay-bee....'

I was very impressed by Lady Gaga. I must admit I didn't think she was that good, but now I'm a believer.

She had to do vocal exercises with a coach for six months to get her opera voice back, after being away from all that for so many years.

She got the trumpet last year, to celebrate her return to jazz. It's my favorite of her tat collection.

Hopefully, as her young pop fans age, they will follow her lead to discover a wide variety of old music that they've never known before. :cheers2: That's an important role.

If you look at CD booklet notes from her early albums, she did a good bit of synthesizer programing in the studio, and has also done this for other artists before she got a recording contract of her own.

I think it's a shame that some of her earliest video footage has gone missing in the last couple of years; simple outdoor performances of her singing Broadway-style, with nothing but her own keyboard. What a show.

I believe it. It's hard for a person to immediatly know or hear their own weaknesses and shortcomings sometimes without a professional person to listen and watch. A lot of disipline involve in performing to that high of level.

An important detail is the harmon mute in the bell of the trumpet, more indicative of jazz.

Yep, hopefully...and major kudos to her for that too! [IMG]

  10. She hasn't silenced me. I just hope she stays a jazz singer or whatever she's doing now. Maybe after a long while she can earn her credibility back. If she's going to act like she's got this other identity, which was obviously made up to sell records, then I just can't be a fan.

    Good observation. I agree.

I don't know who was the first to say this, but I strongly agree that you're not a real music fan until you've learned to love at least one thing written and performed before you were born.

Okay, so you still don't understand who she is, as a person. But you can't deny that there is talent there.

She's created many characters on stage, many of which go right over the heads of people who take everything very seriously.

    It is called reinventing oneself.....

    madonna did that as well.
It takes motivation to do that, talent and drive.....and know how.

    ... or simply diversity.

John Mayer does pop because it pays the bills, and blues guitar because he loves it.

Ever hear an older famous musician talk about their home music collection? There are always items in it that you wouldn't expect to find, because they seem out of character for the person.

It's not uncommon for a studio musician in Nashville to play on a country record one week, a hard rock album the next week, and perform classical music with the Nashville Symphony over the weekend.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're criticism is she's not genuine? Or just crass because she knows how to sell records?
I'll be the first to say that I'm not fond of Gaga's brand of pop music, but IMO it displays lot more substance and musicality than what you call "Indie"

    Though it's not really fair to compare, Gaga's got more talent in her little finger than...well, you get the idea. (-;

if someone does not like someone else...and in the case, Lady gaga here.....it does not make them unlikable to someone else or vice versa.
