So I've been in my head way to much lately.. I tend to over think everything. I feel like the majority of the world doesn't get me even my parents (although my dad does more than I think as he used to be like me). I tend to overinduldge in some substances at times (mostly psychedelics, alcohol and mdma) however I always feel like I'm not as bad as I used to be because I don't pop pills or take any drug put in front of me nowadays. I tend to have some control over my use nowadays, I make better decisions (some need work) and if I have drugs I share with my friends most the time even free of charge. However I am also in drug classes that I feel like mess with my head. I would just love some advice on this if anyone can help because I honestly don't see complete sobriety as nessesary but at the same time I do over indulge and spend to much money sometimes. I don't fear "death" which I don't know is good or bad as I've seen my life literally flash before my eyes before but at the same time I still get scared at times.. I even had a hippie read my hands at a 12 hour rave(a lot of hippies were there) I went to on new years and she told me I need to stop worrying so much. Anyways sorry for so long of a post this has been on my mind for a long time

Now is a good time to learn about yourself and what triggers your drug use. Asking yourself why you do drugs can help you decide if your use of them should be more limited.

Thanks for the reply I'm supposed to be getting some shrooms tonight so it will be a good time to learn about myself some more. I never feel like I need drugs anymore I just love going into different states of my mind and I get bored easily. However I have learned for me I have to be careful with stimulants that and liquor and the only two things I feel like really push me over board.

Just got finished reading a really cool book : The 27 club. Being a hippie is not just about experimenting w/drugs and alcohol. It's about stepping away from the norm, and deciding for yourself what is the right path you want to travel down. If you fall into the hippie myth, you might end up like Brian Jones, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse. All of them died at the age of 27. They got caught up in the fantasy of excess and escapism.

It's totally sad that they died. So much life and talent gone too soon. Moderation is the key. What good is immortality (if you have the talent) once you are dead? Corporations will make huge bucks from your legacy, and all you will get in return is silence and darkness. I wish you peace and good luck. Get that book (The 27 Club) from the library if you can. It really helped me to make healthy changes in my life :)

According to Gabor Mate and a growing circle of enlightened medical people, the craving for substances is caused by a deep inner emptiness or loneliness or a feeling of incompletion. Easy enough to understand with the kind of world we live in. Seems like everything conspires to rob us of our basic needs ....for community, connection, meaning in our daily routine, people in our circle capable of accepting and giving love, good things to hope for, trust in the future, satisfaction with our past). And Gabor Mate is convinced that people addicted to hard drugs were universally abused as children. My take on things is that good cannabis is extremely helpful to people who suffer from isolation and loneliness and social exclusion. It so enhances the inner life that the intolerable pressure of outer deprivation becomes possible to endure, ignore or utilize for greater personal understanding.

I am so glad that finally the stigma of drug use is disappearing and being replaced with a vastly greater understanding of why people are driven to self-medicate. Of course the project will never be complete until we can create a world where all our basic human needs are possible to satisfy so no one feels driven to self medicate. But substances must not be criminalized and I applaud the growing move toward decriminalization and legalization....

No wonder the original hippies were so obsessed with not so much the self-medication...but the vision of a better world for all. And I say that vision should always be renewed and honored and fought for. Our hip history needs to be studied so that those humanistic values are NEVER compromised or co-opted.

Don't forget who the sober you is. Some people die from drug use. I'd use drugs to change who sober me is. Mostly learning to accept sobriety.

well if your focus is entirely on recreation chemistry and hedonism, that's not what i would consider a real hippie.
that's what corporate media wanted people to believe was a hippie.
which is just some guy with long hair who likes such things.

to me, and of course its all opinion, and i know about everybody having at least one of those,
but to me, caring more about the kind of world we create, then what anyone thinks of us individually as a person,
its that, that its really all about.

I identify with hippiedom because I am a creative pacifist / suffocated by structure / with a desire to live a simple life. I have been on a quest for spiritual enlightenment since the early '70s. I got into psychedelics as a way of opening my mind. "Tune in, turn on and drop out" -- Timothy Leary

Weed was the counter-culture way of chilling out and a political statement against the medical establishment. It was all about love and changing the world and yea - we played and had a lot of fun, too, but ultimately we smoked or dropped with a higher purpose.
