There have been various times in my life when I have been around the mentally ill. I won't go into all the details. But actually, I once went to a community college which seemed to have an inordinate amount of mentally ill people in it. Seriously. I don't know how or why, but there were clear signs of this.

Anyways, one time I was in the hallway of the school. And I heard a girl student scream in one of the classrooms. I wasn't in the classroom itself. So I don't know the details (including how the teacher and students reacted to her outburst).

But as I said. It wasn't the first time. The mentally ill do it sometimes (and note I call them "mentally ill", and don't use the pejorative term "crazy people" some others might). They suddenly scream.

    Why?

probably the same emotions and feelings that cause regular people to scream.

I couldn't say for sure, I imagine it somewhat depends on what mental illness they have. I have various mental ailments but I cannot say I ever randomly scream. If I get frusterated I might yell profanities if it slips out, though I try not to cause too much of a scene...but I think normal people tend to do that as well at times.

Define mentally ill? Do you mean mentally retarded, depressed, bipolar, schizophrenic, etc?

    i don't know. i'm not clinically insane.

however, it's related to altered/defective brain function, lack of inhibitory neural mechanisms, inability to adeqately understand social context and the environment, etc. it could be an impulse reaction (screaming isn't language), a way to try to communicate something, or a behavioral aberration. sometimes, maybe they scream just because they can. babies do it too.

I never scream...don't know if I am able to. Never have. I can yell, though.

If I had to deal with the medical system in dealing with mental health issues, I would probably scream as well.

I don't know for sure. But I assume they are usually Schizophrenic, FWIW. (Plus, as I've said, I have nothing against mentally ill people per se. Mental illness has certainly touched my family. I just wonder why they sometimes scream :) .)

Sometimes all that is left to do at the night time is look right at the moon disc and HOOOOWOWWWWWWWLLLLLLL. I think whether I suffer from personality disorder or depression is irrelevant at that point. I do it because it feels good, feels right. :)

Odd? Perhaps... But I've always been kind of odd.

I ask because the nature of the disability can help me answer your question.

Yes an impulse to something out of frustration, confusion, anger. Just a response stimuli.

Keep in mind that there are many different types of mental illnesses. So there can be many reasons as to why someone would randomly scream. But not all mental ill people scream. Because you have those dealing with depression, anxiety, and all types of forms and om different degrees.
