Since 1961, the US has treated Cuba like the worst nation on earth; worse than Russia, China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Iran. This extreme pressure has produced no positive changes in Cuban policy, while greatly diminishing the quality of life for all Cubans. Obama announced today that he is ending this policy. New embassies will open; travel and trade will resume.

Nobody is saying that Cuba has solved all its problems; only that it deserves no worse treatment from the US than China, which has similar political views and human rights policies.

Being only 90 miles away from Florida at its closest point, I'm expecting a boom in tourism. Havana was once a very popular destination for Americans, especially in winter.

Obama can't do it all himself is all for those who are down on him. Even in what you think his bad decisions there is a group behind it.

The fucking POS goes behind the American publics back and 'trades' lowlifes and people are happy? Are you mental? Shows you right there he is a communist/muslim waste of space.

You have to be pretty stupid to stand behind a blatant slap to you're face when you find out 'after the fact' and the HNIC thinks he can just shred the old paperwork and say call cuba good to go. But goes to show there is still some stupid around America along with supporters of.
They only wanted to shoot missiles at us and kill us, But that's all good and forgotten now, So it seem lol. That's why they get treated just as they are.

Sorry, but I'm not content to live in the dark ages forever, because of your international-relations-turned-personal gripes with cuba - oh imagine, they tried to put missiles there after we tried to assassinate their leader like 28 times..... poor us?

IR is not an interpersonal squabble where you can hold grudges, you don't get anything for acting like a little girl. Grow up, and the world gets safer and nicer.

The chance to make the world better outweighs your chance to grasp at fights we could have already forgotten and moved past.

Obama can do whatever the hell he wants in international relations - this is like the second good thing he's ever done, I'll take it.

    Like Obama decides anything. lol

There are bigger geopolitical implications at play here. Don't kid yourselves. It's not like Obama simply decided to strike a deal with Cuba for no good reason.

It's people like you who make me despise both sides of the political debate almost equally.

Either it be him or the puppet masters, They are making some real fucked up calls and decisions at the wrong time. He has a power trip going a 'thinks' 'he' can do what he wants. Plus we tried to nip the 'crisis' by killing their nut ball, We missed.

I'm not sure why anyone would think this is a bad move. This was brilliant and I'm sure that the leadership of both parties were well-informed about and in support of this behind closed doors. He didn't just pull this out of his ass and the prisoner swap is a facade. Think about this....for decades, Russia bankrolled Cuba. We had the Cuban missile crisis years ago. Russia is in pretty deep trouble economically as of right now due to sanctions and falling oil prices. More recently, Venezuela was the country propping Cuba up financially. That economy is in turmoil due to falling oil prices. We've known for a long time that US policy towards Cuba has been ineffective at best but there was no face-saving way to get away from it. So right now we can do what the president is doing and draw Cuba towards us or we can do nothing and let someone like China step in and influence Cuba. Money talks.

Sanctions and the embargo have mostly hurt the Cuban people. Raul Castro has actually made some substantial progress (not perfect...but progress) with reforming the country. Back in the Bush II era, Cuba more or less offered an olive branch and Bush responded with a big "fuck you". So in the end game scenario....Cubans will be better off with increased prosperity, American businesses will eventually expand into Cuba, Raul Castro can say he opened up his country and improved lives, Obama can say he ended the "cold war" with Cuba and there will be no other country stepping into any influential role just off our coast. It's perfect and again...behind closed doors...I'm sure both parties see this and are on the bus.

There's plenty of really obvious reasons - none of them sinister.

I really expected more of this sort of thing from Obama, earlier. But... this is big.

I wonder what the new Cuba will be like. More contact with the outside world will change the place. Havana used to be quite romantic, back when Ernest Hemingway used to hang out there.
