Surely the act of admiring pretentious images that make the last meal I puked out look like a masterpiece, does make one wonder sometimes.

There were no photographs in socrates' days. WE are in the 21st Century, for goodness sakes.

Any worked out brainstorm can be (perceived as) art. So even religion. Why so many people condemn it altogether? Probably as I saw thedope mention in another thread: they've been dissappointed with religion (or as it seems to me: more often with some of their followers) some way or another, to such a degree they can only shit on it.

edit: kind of like me with most abstract art :bobby:

I am not an art guy by any means... but it is not pretentious bullshit...

Look at the stuff that Salvador Dali painted. That's some talent.

"Art as a fitness indicator. It has been argued that the ability of the human brain by far exceeds what was needed for survival in the ancestral environment. Oneevolutionary psychology explanation for this is that the human brain and associated traits (such as artistic ability and creativity) are the human equivalent of the peacock's tail. The purpose of the male peacock's extravagant tail has been argued to be to attract females (see also Fisherian runaway and handicap principle). According to this theory superior execution of art was evolutionary important because it attracted mates."

    - this is a quote from Wikipedia that states that artistic ability somehow shows to the "females" of the species that you have good genetics, similar to a peacocks feather.

    Art is nonsense????

You must have never heard Nickelback before! Hahaha!!! (sarcasm. In case I had to say that)

But it does take talent to sculpt and draw/paint, does it not?

    Do you not agree?

    http://www.hf.uio.no/ifikk/bilder/Lied/LIED013.JPG

Now, as far as trying to interpret any "meaning" behind it, I would say that's probably pretentious in most, if not all, cases.

Yet, at the same time, there are many drawings/paintings by non-famous non-professionals that are basically just as good as by the famous people.

and... NO ONE.... is going to convince me that a can of Tomato Soup is art in any way shape or form, or that it means anything...

AND.... a lot of artists are homosexual.... what does that mean? I don't know... but some psychologists would tell you that art can be seen as mis-guided sexual energy....

You're right. This means nothing. "Cubism."

Okay... and that means what exactly? How is it of any importance?

Maybe real art, like Dali as a good example has more to do do with real spirituality than religion.

All the ingenuity of man is ingenuous, that is artless in the light of the sunrise.

Art is not a filter for parents to mediate their kids childhood through like religion is in terms of ideology, morality, etc. (although i'm sure some parents are adamant their kids join the school band at what not) nor will identifying with a particular view of art, be a way to gain political votes in the way religion can. For instance, the fact a canidate is a Mormon or Christian often plays a significant part of their platform and constituents. I don't think the same could be said if a canidate mentioned they supported jazz.

In terms of cultural practicality, those are a few examples that show religion is nonsense in the way art is not.
