The Maze Runner

This is one of those young adult movies of a dystopian world of the future, like Divergent or The Giver where youth are being tested to be the salvation and make a better world.

It starts with a young man (Dylan O'Brien - who so much reminded me of a young Paul Walker) being rapidly carried in a metal box of an elevator to the top, which opens on an open field where he is greeted by a bunch of other young men. He is confused and can't remember anything about his life, but is reassured by Alby (Aml Ameen) the leader of The Gladers, as they call themselves, that it has happened to all of them and that he should shortly remember his name.

After some initial resistance he calms and is introduced to the other guys and to their plight of being in The Glade within a high wall enclosure that opens during the day into the maze. This has been going on for 3 years (Alby being the first) and each month another guy arrives by The Box. They have a system of survival set up and fastest among them, the Runners have been mapping the maze trying to find any escape route.

The runners have to get back before night when the huge stone gates close the maze and no one has ever survived a night in the maze because of the Grievers or monsters that are there. So far this story (from James Dashner's 2009 book of the same name) is a little like Lord of the Flies where a bunch of boys were marooned on an island and had a tenuous hierarchy of government they set up with certain duties, which eventually had dissension.

Soon the new guy remembers his name is Thomas and starts exhibiting a defiance to the rules and finds himself becoming an impromptu Maze Runner when he runs in at dusk to help Alby and Minho (Ki-hong Lee) who were trapped inside. This does not go well with Gally (Will Poulter) who did not care for Thomas from his arrival. When Alby gets injured by one of the Grievers, leadership falls to Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) who is physically much smaller than Gally - so he cannot directly confront him.

While all this dissension and new problems are happening, The Box makes an unusual second delivery within a month. And, for the first time it's a girl, Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) who opens her eyes and immediately recognizes Thomas. This makes Gally even more suspicious of Thomas messing up the orderly system in which they have been living.

From here there are more daring trips into the Maze and some good, suspenseful action scenes with a maze that readjusts itself like clockwork and the ever present Grievers. You know it's a movie but you still grip your armrest while these scenes play out. The young actors are very good and get you involved in their lives.

I liked the movie as did most reviewers. As with several of these recent young adult movies that end with a set-up for a sequel that likely will not happen, this one is already in the works.

"The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, will hit theaters in less than a year on September 18th, 2015"

'The Maze Runner' Leads Box Office

Three new releases topped the box office this weekend, with "The Maze Runner" finding its way into the lead with an estimated $32.5 million.
The other new releases, "A Walk Among the Tombstones" and "This Is Where I Leave You," followed with openings that fell short of expectations.

Of the three new releases, audiences seemed to like "Maze Runner" best, giving it an A- grade, according to the CinemaScore market research firm. "This Is Where I Leave You" received a B+ and "Tombstones" got a B-.

"Maze Runner," starring "Teen Wolf" actor Dylan O'Brien as a young man whose memory is erased before being dropped into a post-apocalyptic maze, fared better than some recent young-adult adaptations like last year's flop, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones." Its opening weekend wasn't in the stratospheric territory of "The Hunger Games," but its budget of $34 million makes it a less risky bet for Twentieth Century Fox.

About 49% of the "Maze Runner" audience this weekend was male, giving it a more even gender split than young-adult adaptations "Divergent" and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," which Fox's head of domestic distribution, Chris Aronson, said attests to Mr. O'Brien in the lead role. Overseas returns brought the movie's world-wide cumulative total to $81.5 million.

The film was adapted from the first book in James Dashner's series, which also includes two sequels and a prequel. Fox has begun preproduction on the film adaptation of the next book in the series, "The Scorch Trials," slated for release on Sept. 18, 2015.
