I've now been to Old Trafford more often than most people who say they "support" Manchester United. I would very much like to know if anyone has EVER gone to watch a game barefoot there.

While my meetup friends had a fun day out which I had to miss as I couldn't be in two places at once, I travelled oop north to what some people naively call the "Theatre of Dreams". Other people's dreams of course. The game was a massive let down but the day out was certainly enjoyable. I also had the longest change of one at a time "do you have any shoes?"/"where are your shoes?" from stewards not listening to their colleagues asking the same question immediately before thm. Made me chuckle!

If the video doesn't work it probably hasn't finished processing yet. You shouldn't need to wait too long before it has.

  2. Time to play that ever-popular transcultural guessing game "Why Is That Person Barefoot?"
Today's options are (and do pay close attention):

    A) Because 'e's barkin' mad, 'e is!
    B) Because the bloke is obviously on the dole. (Get a job, wanker!)
    C) Because 'e's totally entitled to do so, and full marks to 'im for so doin'!

Some lovely choices, there! And here, for your delectation, are today's added options:

    D) Because he's a London-based hipster jazz musician, and such dissolute types have a long record of 'previous,' in terms of foisting their beard topiary and beatnik-style shoelessness on the public at large in certain (often contained) settings
    E) Because he's possibly a narcissist of the 'compensatory' type
    F) Because he's a supporter of 'Arry's No-Hopes, and is making a statement about how 'bootless' (read: 'toothless') the current QPR team is!

Thanks for continuing posting your visits to football grounds. I do go barefoot though not full time as you good self. I would love to be as brave as you to go to a game barefoot. Looks you had a good day apart from the result (though yesterday's result must have made you chuckle, well I did) :D Good the way you explained to the stewards about not having shoes when you were getting into Old Trafford, I was afraid they were going to stop you.

Yes I'm quite used to giving explanations these days. Two things in particular make it easier. One is the ground regulations often posted just behind where the stewards stand (there was a copy just barely in shot at Old Trafford). The other is words is starting to get around now so a lot of stewards have seen me or heard of me and know I don't cause trouble and often are straight in reassuring their colleagues before I can open my mouth.

Next week will put that to the test though as I'm at West Ham and have been invited to sit with the home fans who know me through joining in with their charity walks. So if the stewards know me as a QPR fan I may have a different kind of explaining to do. However the West Ham fans who know me know I do these charity walks barefoot and that I'm one of their mates and no trouble maker so I should be ok. As it happens I'll be doing another walk to get there from QPR - this time woth a group of QPR fans supporting their Downs Syndrome Community work. 14 miles barefoot across London. I've done it before. It's not easy with my joints, but it'd be impossible for me with shoes on. I of course let people think bare feet adds to the difficulty though to benefit the charity more. :)
