Reports of 11 planes missing from a Libya airport are raising fears that militants who stole the jetliners could use them in terror attacks to mark the 9/11 anniversary.
Intelligence agencies have warned the jets could be used in attacks in North Africa, and said one or more of the planes may be used to strike targets on Sept. 11 to mark the anniversary of terrorist attacks on the USA, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
I wonder why this is getting so little media coverage?

    Ehh.

Amazing they were able to steal them. Wonder if they managed to land them - and then the odds of being able to take them off again have got to be pretty low. Being able to take control and point it at something when a real pilot got it up is one thing, but you have to be a fucking wizard to fly a large airplane, there's really no visibility to speak of, the thing's absolutely giant, the instruments are immensely complex.

They're probably not that worried because taking care of a jetliner is no small task - and there will probably be planes in the air to intercept them if needbe.

Maybe they just stole them because hey, they're fucking airplanes, they're worth a lot of money, they're full of valuable stuff - if you know like, a jetliner fence. (What the hell kind of junkyard deals in hot airbus parts? "don't worry brah, the boeing vins are gone, and the airbuses onstar is disabled")

They can track that shit, you need seriously educated people to just turn off jetliners tracking systems - as we saw with malasia.

It doesn't say how they were stolen - if it was in a period of strife, what if they were just sawzalled up and carried off fol aluminium?

Who said they're going to terrorize the USA? They could be used anywhere in the world and blamed on terrorists. Whether it happens here or elsewhere, it would still benefit those wanting to wage war and further erode our freedoms.

All they did was take the thing from qualified pilots, after having qualified ground crews service them.

Taking potentially damaged planes and taking off from an unmanned airport, managing to land, and then managing to get them started and in the air again, and coordinating things like fuel, on some makeshift airstrip? Just the area needed to land is immense. Even starting a jet engine can be a serious undertaking.

Not saying it's not possible - just that I don't see that kind of people being able to do it. 9/11 was just a case of snatching the controls and aiming the thing, not having real pilots and crews ready to kill themselves over it. Radicals tend to not be people with the education and prospects of a jetliner pilot.

So what about terrorist attacks that have happened in London, Madrid, etc? I don't think the US and Israel are the only potential targets.

Well, the "terrorists" on 9/11 were able to strike 75% of their targets, which, according to seasoned pilots, would have been near impossible for even the best pilots to pull off (especially the strike on the Pentagon). Granted you believe the official version of what happened on 9/11, a similar thing happening again doesn't exactly seem impossible.

But it's just not the same situation - they barely got that to work in a number of ways, but this has about ten thousand extra layers of complexity and luck and such.

One big thing is the preparation - we should have been prepared, but we were NOT prepared, and we got sucker punched. This is not out of the blue, there will be (already are) jets from many nations on hand to intercept them, you can be sure.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I wouldn't believe some ignorant jihadii managed to steal, service, care for, prepare, take off, and then crash one, much less 11. They probably couldn't even fuel the thing.... they probably couldn't even read the "fuel" label, as far as I'm concerned. If there is a successful attack with these, my immediate assumption would be to look at the regional governments, and see who benefited - whoever does used their military to steal the planes, train the suicide pilots to the necessary degree, coordinate airstrip locations, provide parts and fuel.etc.

If it happens, it is a governmental conspiracy, and a very close regional one - so they don't have to worry about the planes being spotted on anyone else's radar or anything like that - they're already in the country they'll strike in - they could even take off from a legitimate airport or military base.

that said, I don't think it will happen. I bet there's some libyans who are really proud of their fancy new duralum roofs.

It doesn't have to be in London. It would be somewhere in Africa.

    Why africa?

All countries do bad things - anyone in the area would have a motivation to do something like this, at least, following the "rational actor" model.

Especially if you're taking a conspiratorial approach to it.

I looked into it, I guess it's a plane at the Tripoli airport that got trashed instead of taken. I didn't realize that the islamic militants seized the entire Tripoli airport and completely destroyed it.

If they wanted to fly the planes but didn't have the necessary skills, they'd likely just kidnap pilots.

Good luck finding a pilot who will fly a plane for an islamic militant. Even if they did, they wouldn't do what the militants said.

Why? Because they'd be 100% assured of dying if they did - they'd have nothing to lose by pointing it out to sea, or setting it so that it couldn't be turned around without pilot's knowledge and landed in the middle of nowhere, or by faking a loss of control and emergency landing..... etc.

The pilot would have nothing to gain and everything to lose by helping militants - and the militants wouldn't have the slightest idea if they were being put on - they wouldn't even know what direction they were being flown.

Oh, but you say that while sitting comfortably, all rational and idealistic. I've always wondered why passengers on AA 11 didn't kick ass when they realized what was happening.
