Not as far out of the mainstream as you may think. Star Trek: TOS even did a story on it once (Who Mourns for Adonis?).

Count the ancient gods of old (Zeus, Apollo, Hera, etc.) actually have been advanced ET's? For that matter, could the Christian God have been an ET?

There are many striking stories in the Christian bible, such as beings floating on clouds, and God magically appearing and reappearing in places.

    Well?

Who knows for sure? But I have no difficulty to imagine that advanced aliens could make quite an impression on ancient humans, supposing they ever met them, and be seen as gods from then on.

well people who live on other worlds are just people, who look different, maybe not even like anything we would of as people or even alive, but that's only because they evolved on their own worlds rather then ours.

if you met someone who didn't look like you and had technology you weren't familiar with, would you call them a god?

if you were inclined to see gods in everything and everything the work of them you might, but i don't think you'd ever have a situation where everyone thought that way.
instead people would have differing opinions.

Absolutely! Looking back at all the old religions, they had gods for different aspects of life. There were sun gods, music gods, gods of the harvest, hunt, etc. Who is to say that the chief deity of such religions was just the boss and all the other "lesser gods" were just in charge of different things. Greek pantheon, Zeus runs the show. Hades is god of the underworld. Maybe he was in charge of autopsies and disposing of corpses. Haephestus, god of the forge, was perhaps just head of maintenance.

I will go into the judaeo-christian pantheon. All the stories talk of only a select few going to heaven and that heaven is a place somewhere in the clouds. Who is to say that the Rapture won't just be a massive planet wide "abduction"? They will probably take mostly children as they will be easier to manipulate, as well as some adults for breeding purposes. Heaven is the mother ship. God is an ET, the angels are the lesser gods of old. When the day comes, I hope they take my kids, so as to spare them from the devastation that is to occur to Earth by us stupid humans.

" how to serve man " (a cook book)

this is a rather unlikely scenario however. not an impossible one, but, if you have worlds with that capability, how long would they get along with each other without someone doing something about it? unless there were only one, which would be even more unlikely.

This stuff is promoted on Ancient Aliens which airs on the history channel, so you could say it is mainstream.

I don't ascribe to the notion, for instance the Greek Gods (as well as Romans and other polytheistic cultures) have too specific and defined roles.

From what I gather, the Greeks personified alot of their emotions into deities, including some of the great Philosophers, who thought that perhaps qualities such as Good and love have ultimate ideals which exist independently from experience. Thus they create a god such as Eros (God of Love) to explain where these idealized qualities originate from.

Also in pre-industrial, pre-technological, mostly pre-literate civilizations, people's view of the world was probably quite different.

I suspect pareidolia was far more common in the ancient world, that is the phenomena to ascribe significance to rather mundane objects and we are wired to see faces. So as an example like the one below, ancient might anthromoporphize to give it human characteristics.

et's are just people who look 'funny' to each other because of coming from different worlds to each other. gods are something, that are known only to themselves what they are.

the universe is full of things we don't need to know how they work for them to do so. it doesn't matter if they're technology, magic or nature. what we do with them, does.

I believe there have been many different 'beings' messing around with humans throughout our history.

I think we started braining a little too much for them and they pulled back for a bit.

Probably to watch us implode on ourselves because they saw it coming.

    /not talking about God here.
