Women are often encouranged to be celibate for six months because they don't need a man.

Men rely on women their entire lives, for sex, for love, for children, for help with housework, to take care of them in old age... but no women have to be completely independent of them and isolated and celibate.

I have a male friend who has slept with 768 women and immediately got married and had kids. He has never gone a stretch of time without women.

i don't think any women are being encouraged to avoid all males in any context. the issue is how a majority of women jump from relationship to relationship and never experience being single. sure, there are men that do this too, but it's not nearly as universal with men.

Yes, because all of those stereotypes are 100% true and accurate down to the last detail all the time for every person

Wait... what was your point? If you're complaining about conformity, don't conform, it's that simple, duh. Oprah and Steve Harley ain't god, and I don't even listen to god anyway

And really, it's wise for either sex to take time off between relationships

I've never heard of this encouragement at all. I tend to feel society encourages me to be open with sex.

OMG Steve Harvey's book has he worst advice. For a woman like me, that biok says stop being myself. It says stop being myself, or I won't ever be with a good man. No, if I stop being myself, I won't ever be with a good man who loves the real me. Duh. For his information I have never been without sex nor love. Well... I went without sex when I fell in love with a man who led me to believe he was more I to sex than he was, but that's a different story.

op seems to think men rely on women most of their lives but think women don't also rely on men for all the same things?

last time I checked women cant give birth without a dude being there at some point.....and if I manage to convince a woman living with me to clean my house then aren't I also providing her with a home hence she is relying on me too?......its a 2 way street

except of course gay dudes...they don't rely on women for much.....except a kid at some point but that is adoption or surrogacy....its a business deal

This is precisely how I feel. That's also how I know who my true friends are. If they know the real me and they accept it, then that's more of a true friend. I also lead with sex on the Internet like with sex-related screen names because I want to be authentic on-line. This is really me. And that's how you build good communities instead of shitty communities that demand conformity.

Oh eff off -- not all men depend on women.

I have went plenty of time without a woman and have done just fine. I really have no need for a relationship with someone. I love myself too much.

I am so sick of people making rash judgments based on the people they know. If you know a guy who's slept with 768 women (only a moron or liar would keep count of that many), then he's probably just a dirtbag. That is simply not indicative of all, or even a fraction of men.

Some people's threads annoy the living fuck out of me. Ugh.

You misread the OP. She says that certain messages are sent to women by our society, one of which is that women have to be independent, never rely on a man for happiness, be proud and single, and happy, or they are not real women. What the OP further states is that she disagrees with this message. Read it again and you will see.

Aren't all men, gay straight and else ways, born of women?

In my circles, and my friends are intelligent and thoughtful, the idea is a break to be with you after a loving partner relationship dissolves.
    It isn't dependent on gender.
    Or orientation.

Sure the comment about scratching an itch might come up, but we do try (emphasis on try) to have some alone time.

    It's healthy, for a while.
And it gives space to work out some of the dysfunction of the ended relationship, without the emotional clutter of a new lover.

    A vacation.

Men rely on women for children? Pretty sure you've got it the other way round.
