I've been listening to Surrealistic Pillow and Cheap Thrills all day long. Grace and Janis both had way powerful voices. But Grace Slick's voice seems to be more polished and trained. Janis was more like a force of nature.

I'm just curious which sort of voice HF listeners prefer: Something more studied and learned, or something which comes natural and deep from the soul.

I personally prefer Janis, but I will fess up that White Rabbit is one of my all time fave tunes. And Grace wrote the lyrics, so good for her.

So do you prefer a more polished voice, or something more natural and real?

Interesting little tidbit: Both Janis and Grace started out as painters. Sort of makes you wonder what might have happened if they'd stuck with art instead of music? In fact Grace is now working more on her paintings than music.

Pretty surreal, given how big Jefferson Airplane was during its time and place in history.

For me it would be Janis. Her voice was just so powerful, full of emotion, and completely unique. There will always be people who sound like Mariah Carey, but there will never be anyone who sounds like Janis Joplin.

Now as far as the actual music goes, I prefer the psychedelic soundscapes of Jefferson Airplane to the somewhat generic blues rock of the Full Tilt Boogie and Kozmic Blues Band. (Big Brother and the Holding Company were sloppy as fuck, but at least their shambolic rawness suited Janis's voice a whole lot more than the dumbed-down bar rock on the albums that followed.)

Regarding Jefferson Airplane, I like Surrealistic Pillow a lot -- it is definitely a classic album -- and some of their later albums have their moments, but to me the bulk of their catalog sounds too dated for the amount of acclaim JA receives. That, and Marty Balin is a douche.

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. Too much popular music is manufactured to appeal to the masses. Janis (at least at the start) broke all the rules. And she did so brilliantly.

Grace Slick was so pretty back in the day. Has anyone seen what she looks like today? It's NOT pretty. I know I am being shallow, but damn time is harsh on some people.

I love it that she sounds like a little old lady (while she was still in her twenties)? She did an honest interpretation of this song (and honesty is rare in the music biz). Only one Janis.

Janis brought her soul up from her toenails when she sang.

How do you compare two of the greatest female vocalists of Rock and Roll and then pick one over the other?

Janis was great in a raw, down to earth way and sad in that she embraced destructive activities that led to her demise. Grace is sophisticated, extremely intelligent, and able to transform herself moving with ease among her affluent past, modeling, rock and roll years, and into a successful career as a painter.

I love them both but really appreciate Grace's ability, as a singer, to take the lead roll, write music and lyrics, and also perform brilliantly as a backup singer in many songs. She has the ability to use her voice as an instrument adding complexity to many JA/JS compositions that would would not be the same without her.

Rumor is that she plays acoustic guitar in this song (she wrote the lyrics) but I don't know for sure.

"Another Grace, young, pretty and ready to go ahead, like a scout, and test the waters. She would come back to camp and tell the tribe the wonders that evolve in any search." ~ Grace Slick about herself.

My favourite from roughly that time, last century, was Etta James

But I prefer to live in the present, Swift vs Rhi Rhi
