I posted about this in a music thread but thought I'd start a different thread. The thread title says it all. I have to move ASAP. I have no idea what we are going to do yet. We don't have anywhere to go right now (we have friends, etc but that isn't a solution)

There was major storm damage on my house a couple of weeks ago. I have spent several years and thousands of dollars remodeling this place. I've put so much work into this place to make it nice and perfect. One storm ruined it. The house has to basically be gutted to the frame and rebuilt. Almost the entire house and all of the electrical stuff. They want us out in a week. We don't have anywhere to go. They know that and are completely cool about it but still....we can go to hotel for a while but we have to find a real place. The estimated damage so far is more than the house is even worth. It's probably only going to get worse as they tear into it.

Some of my friends have been like "Hey...your house will basically be new when you come home". That's true. It will be super nice but....I don't have anywhere to freaking live for the next few months. My daughter keeps asking me where we are going to go and I have to keep telling her it will be ok....don't worry. It will be ok....but geez....this is pretty overwhelming. I keep walking through the house and thinking about what it will look like when I'm standing in the first floor living room and looking up through the ceiling, through the second floor and ceiling and see the interior of the roof. That's what they are going to do. Nothing original will be left of this house besides the frame and the exterior.

    Oh...man. sorry for venting.

Will your homeowners insurance pay for a place to stay while it is being repaired?

Damn Wiz. I'm really sorry to hear that. :( Will your insurance cover the costs of repairing everything? That sucks. I know how much work you've put into your house. As nice as it will be to have everything brand new I'm sure it will still seem weird like its not the same house at all. I hope you get everything figured out soon. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help out while you're dealing with all this shit since we live pretty close to each other.

At least you had insurance...ahh well, huge headache I'm sure, but you'll get through it, mang. Just try to have fun with the hotel stay..., use all the towels you want, leave the AC on, use the pool a lot, jump on the bed, lol

Good luck with it all, Wiz

Yup. They are being very good and paying for everything beyond my $1000 deductible. But i thought when we called them that the damage was minimal. I wasn't even going to make a claim. I thought we could deal with it. But once they got here, they saw what was really going on and it seems pretty bad. I have to say...I have plenty of policies with my business, home, cars, etc and I've always hated paying them but...damn....the one time I needed it, they are not messing around. They are doing everything possible to fix this. As much as we might be in a bit of a jam....I couldn't be happier with my coverage so far.

We only have one left at home. She's the pup. Only 10. We found out today that our oldest needs to have wisdom teeth removed too so thats going to cost me about $2500 that I wasn't planning on paying. Sigh.....I'm going back to sleep.

That's great you don't have to worry about cost although I know finding a new place is a pain in the ass. Maybe you could find an apartment complex with furnished rentals so all you have to move is your clothes.

    Good luck to you!

When my last house burned down the policy covered rent for a place to stay for up to 12 months... They didn't really want to pay for 12 months though and started rushing me to find a place ASAP. They were offering an additional $60,000+ to effect repairs on the "new place" and I found this house... Figuring "Yeah, I can point with a stick, say 'Fix that' and write checks" $60,000 would have gone a long way.

Then they decided to not cough up the additional funds and canceled the policy on the new house... Thus I'm having to fix all this myself with no help and very little funds. One of the reasons for canceling the policy was "weeds growing up against the house" before I even had a chance to get up here and do anything about that. Another was "tarps on the roof" that needed to be replaced, before I could even get a roofer up here to look at it. When I tried to get money to pay for some work that I had gotten done, like the well, I was told that I "hadn't spent enough yet" .... I've since re-established insurance on this place but I'm "high risk" because I made a claim. At least I had insurance for the fire, but they really don't like paying on claims and can get really pissy about things.

Sorry you are having to go through all this and best of luck with the repairs, but watch your back at the same time.

So sorry this has happened to you and your family. Thankfully you have insurance. While that may not be all that you hope at least it is a starting place to moving on and making a new life.

Could you not have them rebuild and then sell it and move on to some place or home that you would then prefer? It might be a way to at least alleviate some of the financial in a new place.

Hope things come together for you all.

What a bummer. I know how you feel. The craphole I am living is is falling apart and I am through pumping more money into it. Have moved many times under duress. Never a fun thing to do. If your insurance covers your loss you are lucky. If not you are one of many.

Well...so far, it sounds like everything will be pretty smooth sailing with our insurance. They have been great. I do have a plan if things go south but there is no reason to think that will happen at this point. They haven't said for sure that they're covering this but they did tell us to move so contractors can get in here asap and the adjuster said it was covered but a claim this large needs to be signed off on by someone above him.

    211 might help

211 is available for help with food, housing, employment, health care, counseling and more. You can call 211, and you can also visit the website www.211.org for more information.

sorry to hear about this. it's rough, it's a hard kick in the balls, but if you count all the things you have to be grateful for, you might feel better (no one died or was hurt, looks like insurance will pay, etc.)

You may want to file a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General's Office
