Do you see doctors becoming obsolete in the future? When I mention a type of medication or ailment, nine out of ten times, the doctor I'm seeing takes out their iphone and googles whatever I'm talking about.. Doctors don't seem very knowledgeable. It seems some patients are smarter and more informed than their doctor.

Do you think it's possible doctors could become obsolete? Many only write prescriptions, even that is chicken scratch. I can imagine a world where our bodies get scanned by a machine and then our prescriptions are dispensed.. the machine could even check blood pressure and weight.

i was thinking the same thing. Most doctors are EXCELLENT at writing prescriptions. theyll always find a way to write you one for something.

I never seen mine or one at the clinic whip out a smart phone but I guess it might be happening. Obsolete? Possibly, more peeps are helping themselves more then before and then going to doc when they have to, me included, and they are having trouble keeping Docs in small towns in Canada so more peeps might go natural if being forced by waiting lists and such, as well as those finding natural meds work better so by choice.
They seem to be feeling ripped off as well so maybe less will train to be a doctor in future, who knows how that will go.

i don't think being able to google something = years of medical school training.

I'm mostly talking about general doctors. Most times they just spend 5 minutes with their patients and write a prescription. I've come in contact with many doctors who can't even pronounce or spell medications I'm taking or have never even heard of them, makes me a bit un-easy. It seems a machine could easily replace them. I can see the necessity for doctors that specialize in a field as long as they know their stuff and spend time with patients. Though, I can even imagine machines performing surgeries in the future..

no. the medical lobby will continue to pay the lawmakers to make sure it stays illegal for non-doctors to write prescriptions.

Funny you mention this, I was just telling my buddy the other day that Drs. are in business to diagnose and treat. If they cured everybody they'd put themselves out of business in short order.

Hee, yes, another 'funny you should mention that' answer...the last two times I seen my doctor he printed off sheets from wikipedia! I did wonder tonight (apart from the specialists) whether eventually we will have consultations online.

real doctors, no. but the cars they drive and even the roads they drive them on will.

(someone has to program all those autodocs.)

People are also learning how to fix their own cars by watching youtube videos on how to refill your blinker fluid and stuff like that.

There will be more and more doctors needed to prescribe pharmaceuticals to treat illnesses brought about by poor eating habits. Nothing will change. There will always be doctors, but there will be more and more who know less and less about actual health. I really have no respect for most doctors -- general practitioners, esp.

for this reason they should be paid by the government as long as everyone is well, and get paid less when anyone gets sick.

I agree with PR. That said, I would kick any doctor's ass if they took out a phone or tablet whatever and started going online to find out my symptoms.. that has never happened to me, yet. Lucky for the doctors. ;)

I do agree that they aren't usually, the GP's, that knowledgeable. I have been known to tell my doctor's some things...and been right...and have them take MY medical advice. lol.

I will say I recently went to a dermatologist and had some removals and tests and I couldn't have done that myself. Very safely. Luckily they were all benign. :)

GP's are really only there to refer you to the doctors that specialize in what is wrong with you. And you might say why dont you just go to a foot doc if your foot hurts. Because insurance covers more if you go to a GP first. (At least as i understood my plan)

Well, imo, the whole medical asylum business is way off.....Dr. Weil talked of health care in his speeches or books...i forget which....as getting well in retreats with waterfalls and nature and things of that sort.
