I just got off the phone with my brother in laws girlfriend. I've known her for a few years. They've been together a little over a year. We get along fine. Before she hung up she said "I love you". It caught me off guard a little bit. I don't know if she meant to say it or not. We're not at that level in our friendship. I was like "Uhhh....yeah, see you tomorrow".

Have you ever said that accidentally or had it said to you? How do you respond to something like that when its a little awkward?

Awwww I think that's kind of sweet.

Have never said it accidentally, but there was one person I was once so in love with I was worried I would blurt it out. Looking at how it turned out...I'm glad I kept it to myself!

I normally do say that to family before I hang up the phone. I have caught myself almost saying it to some friends who would probably have the same reaction you did. I also have friends who I would say "I love you" to and they would respond in same. Makes me think that it has become a little too easy or automatic for me to say.

I say it to a lot of my friends too but I'm not really on that level with this girl yet.

See if it happens again. She could have just had a mental slip.

It depends on the person and the level of friendship. There are some people who I would say I love you to without a second thought.

Though I will say when someone does say it to you it does make it a tad uncomfortable if it is not something you would say to them.

I know a lot of people that are younger than me do it nowadays. People on my wife's side of the family(females) say it to me, and I rarely see them. Hell, they might not even know my name.

Then again, she might simply just want you.

Once I told the people who brought my tormented soul into this world that I love them.

Base your level of relationship around the fact that you love each other. Makes things much easier :D

Not accidental necessarily, most likely just lighthearted.

Sometimes, but if said too frequently, the word loses its meaning anyway....I used to say it to be nice.....if I cared about a person, and it left me feeling uncomfortable.....so I don't say it really anymore....I say it in other ways, if I do love someone now....

I don't really say that to any of my friends except for one. But I do say it often to my family. My dad used to say it to us when parting and I guess I've always done that too. He said that should something happen to one of us before we see each other again....he wanted the last thing we said to each other to be "I love you". It was.

I have an internet friend I met twice in rel life, as she and her husband visited me here twice.....
She always says I love you to me.....a thousand times....she says it....she also says that life is too short, and if you care deeply about someone you have to tell them......as no one knows when their last day on this planet will be......I agree with what above poster said about that.....
I don't mind hearing it from her....It feels like a comfortable old shoe when she says it...However, I feel stupid saying it back or clumsy or something...so I will say something like yeah...yeah, me, too...love you guys, too...meaning her and her husband ..but I cannot straight out say I love you to her...it feels too awkward for me......

I think the uncomfortableness of hearing an I love you or saying it,, is that it begs a response of some kind......How can one say nothing in response....???

That is it. It leaves you feeling you should respond and yet if that is not how you feel, it can be awkward.
