In the US margarine consumption is at a 70 year low and butter consumption is at a 44 year high according to Dr John Briffa. EDIT I should add that is on a per capita basis.

    http://www.drbriffa.com/2014/01/23/unilever-is-adding-butter-to-one-of-its-margarines-wtf/

    Wonderful news!

Future generations are going to look back at the last half of the 20th century and think it was so odd so many people ate such a crappy product that did not even taste all that good, believing it to be healthy.

I agree wholeheartedly. My family are margarine addicts. They think it helps lower cholesterol. It's such a hard mindset to break, when you start believing that something is healthy, you want protect that belief, for whatever reason.

I love butter. If I had to give up all dairy but one, I think I would chose butter.

I have heard by reading and researchng books and the net that butter actually has enzymes that help us digest some foods so it is important to eat it but in moderation. A good substitute to alter in cooking where the taste additive of butter isnt so important is olive oil or better yet coconut oil.

I don't like butter that much. The thought of smearing some butter over food just grosses me out.

You might not like it but it does help in digestion and if you had something that called for it you are better off with butter then margarine.
I like butter on some stuff and I use it because it is a health food in moderation like most foods should be,,, in moderation.

Sales of margarine are also on a downward spiral and butter sales on the increase in Australia and the UK.

    Butter is amazing.

Margerine is trans fat and kills you, it's highly toxic.

It might not be very good for you in the long run if you eat it all the time, but I don't think it's fair to call it highly toxic.

I never use margerine by choice, but I think the question that should be polled is, in a pinch would you eat margarine? Like say you're having a nice plate of eggs and bacon, the toast pops up and you discover there's nothing but margerine... I'll use a little, over having dry toast. There are palm kernel and olive oil margerines that aren't bad, and fairly healthful.

When margarine is made it is heated to the point of going black so even if good oils are used it is still toxic.
