Modern humans have been subject to commercial advertising. It seems as though its always there. Whether it be on billboards, before your youtube video or during your favorite T.V show. They are constantly evolving along with our culture to appeal to the interest of potential consumers.

What is it to you? Do you subscribe to them? What do you feel its effects are on society as a whole?

we the people have just as much right to remove and destroy advertising as they have had shoving it down our throats.

it can sneak up on you more than you think.... check out word association....
think of burgers, gasoline, your favorite food or products, and i bet you imagine or unconsciously look for a paticular brand.

nothing wrong with ads, all businesses have to advertise one way or another. You see so many a day you block out 90% of them anyway, there's a ton on this site alone.

There have been a few times on YouTube when the ads have been more interesting than the video itself lol and if you don't like ads online there is always adblocker...

Personally. I hate it. I haven't grown used to it. I hate it just as much every single time. With a passion. Its really made me into a cynical asshole at times. The specific reason for hating it varies from ad to ad but there are very few i can actually watch without getting sour especially during drama television.

It just makes me feel trapped in a weird way. Maybe not trapped but an emotion closely related to it. For example. I wait until the day after an episode of the walking dead to watch it just so i can do so without commercials. It ruins it for me. The whole thing.

I feel like its contributing to many mental issues especially in modern children. Add, adhd, etc. I feel as though it is turning/turned culture into a whore. It feels like quite a bit of modern artistic ventures like music, television, and the like aren't genuine when it has adssmeared all over it.

Maybe im just being ignorant of something. Idk. Its just how i honestly feel.

Advertising is the life blood of the system. Convincing people to buy products is the only way it can function. Imagine if no one bought anything for -say-a year. The whole rig would collapse. Some would say rightfully so.

    I like your philosophy

I hate the fact that when i buy a DVD, they feel they have the right to load it up with a whole lot of promotional crap that I have to sit through before I can tell it to play me the film.

I'd happily pay MUCH more for DVDs that didn't do that

Yeah - that's why I hate it so much.

You've sorted everything out, you've got a nice drink in your hand, you settle down to watch something ... and they don't let you just DO it!

that's why I just rip the .vob files off the DVD that are the actual movie and usually just watch it on/through the computer.

    and this is truth;

Bill Mollison once said that if something is advertised, you don't need it.

I guess I agree, something people truly need requires no advertising.

I try to block most of it out. I find it pretty annoying and disgusting that every single fucking bare space is a potential ad spot. I just went to a school concert at the high school the other day and there was a bunch of shit on the wall in the gym. I should also say that, as a business owner, I put my money where my mouth is. I spend zero dollars on advertising every year. We don't even have the company name and phone number on our equipment.

A while back, my daughter wanted a sweatshirt with a name/logo of a certain store (which I won't name and thus...advertise for :) ) I told her no. She asked why I wouldn't buy it. I told her she isn't a billboard...if they want her to advertise for them, they can give her the clothes for free and pay her to wear them.
