There are always so many new IPAs and double IPAs being introduced that it's hard to keep up with them. It would seem that IPAs are easily the most popular style among craft brew enthusiasts. I personally get tired of IPAs after a while and generally feel the style is quite overrated, yet there are some great ones out there. Some of the classic IPAs would be Stone IPA, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Bell's Two Hearted Ale, etc. Two of my favorites as of recent are Firestone Walker Union Jack and Ballast Point Sculpin IPA. I tend to like IPAs with a more juicy, citrus hop profile as opposed to the more piney, dry ones.

Keith's isn't as bitter as most IPAs, I find.

Depends on where you are. Sierra Nevada Torpedo and Pale Ale are both great. Ranger IPA and Rampant IPA from New Belgium are good also. Snake Dog IPA from Flying Dog is a favorite of mine. Right now I'm drinking an Anderson Valley Hop Ottin' IPA. Very floral and grassy and delicious.

Dogfish Head also has a 120 minute IPA that is delicious and heady right out of the store, but also of a quality for adding to your collection and aging. I have a few back waiting for a special occasion.

My Top FIVE IPA/Imperial IPAs at the moment:

    1) Grimm Afterimage
    2) Stone "Enjoy By" (varies each release, though is almost always outstanding)
    3) Ballast Point Sculpin
    4) SInglecut Billy Full Stack
    5) Firestone Walker Double Jack

    Some runners up would be:

    Alesmith IPA
    Bell's Two Hearted
    Sixpoint Puff
    Ballantine IPA
    Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA
    Troegs Nugget Nectar

IPAs I have not had (but want to try) because I have not been able to get ahold of them where I live...

Russian River Pliny The Elder/Pliny The Younger
    The Alchemist Heady Topper
Tree House Brewing Julius and Green

    I try so many beers and don't keep track that I couldn't name a top 5 ipa's
However dogfish head 90 min and troegs nugget nectar would very likely be in there.
Ballast point has a few I like.
And my local favorite is evolution craft brewerys lot6

As a history nut I think it's fun these kind of beers still have the word india in the name.

I'm not the biggest fan of IPAs but I did try a coffee IPA a few weeks ago and it was really good. I can't remember the brewery

Because it relates to the origin of why an ipa beer has more alcohol, is generally more bitter and why it was called Indian pale ale in the first place.
There is no good reason to still call it like that other than the historical origin (which was that these kind of ales were ment for overseas markets, mainly men of the british imperial army of which a lot happened to be in India)

Well, when the normally hopped beers were shipped abroad to India from England, they would be spoiled by the time they arrived in India. They found that adding more hops to the beer prevented spoilage, hence the name of the style.

Yup, the wine was fortified with brandy to make it last long trips.

Was there a reason to change the name?
We can just fly to India in a few hours now so let's change the name to "moon pale ale"
