Please suggest a short story for my student

His english is intermediate level. Under five pages, preferred. Crank out your faves!

 

the monkeys paw.....best short story ever......don't remember exactly but I remember it being a short read

 

"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. It is probably longer than 5 pages though.

 

Edgar Allen Poe, Ray Bradbury, and Isaac Asimov all are good short story writers.

 

Harrison Bergeron's a good one.

 

Thank you all, for your suggestions. I assigned him some Mark Twain the other day, but I'll come back to your suggestions later on as the case may be.

 

Anything by O. Henry. The writing is simple yet elegant (at least I think so ), and the inevitable surprise ending makes an O. Henry story such fun.

I think this would be a wonderful job, and what a fun way to help someone learn English...through good short stories. :2thumbsup:

Edit: just saw your reply when my post went through...can't believe I didn't think of Mark Twain first. Definitely Mark Twain 1st!

I second that. O. Henry is largely forgotten today, and that's a great shame. Most students never ever heard the name. I guess it didn't help him that his stories were a little dated, but they're still a great read.

 

Raymond Carver may be a little too advanced for him, but he can never be introduced too early.
