I've been looking around at seed vendors online. I'm shocked by the prices advertised. Does anybody have a line on affordable seeds that also offer quality?

For sure. The three largest seed catalogues in the UK will yield well over 30 varieties of P.somniferum seed; the indigenous Hen & Chickens yields easily the most potent latex in terms of the three main alkaloids (morphine, codeine, thebaine) & have been bred and used in medicines here since at least 600 years ago. You will find varieties that look nothing like the Afghan and Burmese flowers frequently seen on TV. Danebrog Apple Green is a favourite and several are suited to the climate. Shyama from Kashmir and Persian White grow well as do Giganthemum (high yield but lower levels of active alkaloids). Tasmanian seed, hard to find and quite expensive will NOT be found but are suited to the climate. All come from seed nicked from the high security Aussie Govt opium fields there, where almost all of Australia's opiate needs are met. Worth the high price and you will need to find a 'specialist' to get them. The catalogues in question are Thomson & Morgan, Suttons Seeds and Nicky's Nursery. Grew Danish Flag last year and found them excellent. Prices as low as GBP £2.50 for 3,000 Shyama or H&C. Extremely cheap way of growing your own medications, and a little easy chemistry will get you strong derivatives.
