To those of you who said yes - there is one serious issue that needs to be addressed How are we supposed to know if someones death was assisted suicide or murder?
yes, but i think any legislation that allows for it needs to be very, very carefully written and thought out.
If a person is able to make the decision and is of sound mind, it should be legal, especially for those who are terminal and wish to end their lives on their own terms. There would probably need to be a board that evaluates sound mind so that it could not be used to just bump off old aunty with a fortune but that is something that can be done. We use to have the same system for abortions until it became legal to have one on demand and it worked then.
Under certain circumstances. I wouldn't assist depression cases, cos although it's serious, it can be beaten. If a dude(ette) is completely bedridden, no bowel control and, if each second is a war against pain and wants to be taken out, then I say go for it. That can't be fun.
I think the idea is to 'assist' before it gets to that stage. I suppose there has to be a certain criteria and it has to be well managed - with a doctors supervision (to prevent murder) - but, yeah, sure. It's not for everyone, but those who wish for it should atleast have the opportunity to pursue it - with out repercussions for others (the crux of the matter).
If OP is about euthanasia, sure. It's allowed here, where I live. If it's just about suicide, no. Whoever wants to end his own life, fine. But why would one need assistance? I just wish they'd be more considerate with the people they leave behind. Pay your debt, secure the future of your children, leave proper letters to help them mourn you, and don't kill yourself in a way that will traumatized others and disturb the traffic. Why to jump in front of a train and so traumatize the train conductor, for instance, and the people who'll have to clean up after you? And make commuters arrive late at work/home. Why to shoot yourself in the house your children and wife live and force them to wanna move to another place? The best thing is to look for help and not do it. But if you do decide to do it, at least think of the people you'll leave behind and don't do things that will add to their pain and loss. Having said all of that, I think people should have the right to dispose of their own lives.
Americans just kill themselves with drugs, fast food, alcohol and tobacco, lets not forget guns.. i dont see the problem with it. They should have walk in euthanization centers. if you wanna go, they should let you go peacefully and willingly..
The idea is for professional help and advise that will be effective and not end up as a botched suicide. We have assisted suicide in my state. I'm not sure how miserable I would have to be before requesting it. I have a strong instinct for survival.
because many people seeking assistance with taking their own life no loner have the physical capability to kill themselves.
I put undecided because a lot of people feel suicidal or attempt suicide, and eventually come out of their depression and live an amazing life and are glad that they didn't actually die. I know what most people mean when they talk about assisted suicide is to avoid the suffering of terminal illness or something like that, but what if the person has lost the ability to communicate? How can you know if that's actually what they want or not? I don't think the whole idea is inherently bad, but there are so many factors that would have to be considered.
