Hi, I am new, my name is Catherine. :) I am a hippe from the early 70's. flowers in my hair and all. lol. ok. here is the deal, I would love to make friends and especially a helpmate/soulmate. I realize this isn't a singles board. but, you never know where love will find you, do you? or do i? i mean. ok. I have been care-taking my 91 year old dad and finally had to place him in a home, because my health was deterorating. This just happened at Christmas. It's made me sad and guilty. But, I am dealing with it. I now need to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. I think I would like to have kind friends and live among them in commune style (the real 70's communes). i was wondering if any one of you guys might know of any real communes that might still be operating and i don't mean the one's that are now out there being a minature government, where you hand over all you money to them to join. I want a man and a plot of land or small home. oh, well..enough of my rambling.. i am listening to Cream, right now. In a White Room. i know, i know....overplayed but, what ya gonna do? thanks for listening. Catherine

    Hi, Catherine.

Sorry to hear about what happened with your dad. Please don't feel guilty. Many of my closest friends have some kind of disability or health issue, and that's going to impact anyone's big life decisions. I was just commenting on another board about something else, "Sometimes the problem is there really aren't any 'good' choices..." We all get dilemmas sometimes.

I've often thought about doing the "intentional community" thing, though I think I'm much less formal-minded than a lot of them seem to be from what I understand. There are still a lot of things that appeal to me about the idea though, like generally living in a culture where I'm more aligned and feel less of what I call "that wrong-planet feeling," maybe with friends rather than co-residents or whatever the term would be.

    Hi, Quiet..

I feel the same way, like I don't really "fit in" on this planet. I know, however, realistically I do. I am here for a reason. Just not sure what that is...maybe each day, whatever I do(the good in it) is the reason. Maybe it's not one big mission. Because, I haven't run across my Big mission in life yet. So, my mission might be the more mundane, small, everyday things that i do that have kindness attached to them.
What I would like, (big dreamer here). is to live in a house with no Chemical nothing in it, make of Wood and Slate...(slate on the floors). and beautiful old-salvaged red bricks on the walls. (that would nip my allergies in the bud, once and for all..lol). on a small acreage, lots of wild flowers in my garden and veggies . I long for peace and quiet and clean air. Right now, i live in an industrail area of my town. I have an air purifier running in every room. It's bad stuff i'm breathing, Got a Cement plant and blacktop churning plant (where they take old black top from roads and put it in a big mixer and spew out smoke while it's "cooking") i have a steel plant down the other way ..across the street. to the east of me. and, then about 2 miles away, i have ...TA DA....the one and only ALCOA aluminum plant. if you can beat that. then bunches of oil/diesel refineries sit on the River south of my house. I can smell when there has been a diesel leek. needless to say, i'm waiting to win the lottery. lol...right.

    Hi, Catherine.

I think it's not so much that I don't fit on the planet, but more like somehow I ended up on the wrong parallel earth or something like that. In other words, it's the culture I have more problems with than the earth or even with being human per se.

I'm fairly agnostic about inherent purpose, though I know I feel best when I'm creating, exploring, learning, and sharing experiences with others, and I know I feel most passionate about freedom not only for myself but for the world. I feel that we as individuals and as a species have so much potential but so much baggage from our societies holds us back. I see communes and intentional communities as being at least attempts to reclaim some of that potential. By the way, before I forget again like in my first post, I wanted to send some links to some communities that look interesting to me (though they're outside of the US), plus a more general directory of communities. One of the communities is called ZEGG (a German acronym for Center for Experimental Cultural Design, www.zegg.de), which is in Berlin. The other is called Tamera, and it's in Portugal (www.tamera.org). Neither of these, as far as I know, are the "donate everything you've got" sort of deal you mentioned.

Also, there's a directory maintained by the Fellowship for Intentional Communities (www.ic.org).

Oh my god, I'm surprised you have lungs left, living near all that. I have a friend who lives near a coal plant, and even that seems to cause the sky near his place always to be vaguely hazy. Sounds like where you live, you nearly need SCUBA gear. Have you ever been to the area near the Woodstock concert site? It's really nice there, very clean air, relaxed people. I don't know whether there are communes there exactly, but the few times I've been there it looked like a nice place to be.

    Have a good week.

We should start a commune! I am sure there are plenty of former hippies who would like to reunite or who raised the kids as want a flashback! I have a large family and am a modern hippie! I raise my kids on all the old music and keep a retro vibe! Pretty groovy! :) Wouk love to learn about the time though!

Hi Sorry to hear about your dad. I hope you find a nice hippie guy :) My husband and I are in Florida but looking to venture out to find a hippie commune too. We are working on getting an RV and maybe just heading west until we find someplace like that or start our own. Anybody got suggestions or advise? Peace & Love The Berries

If you do an internet search for intentional communities you should find a lot of them and to make it easy they are listed by states.

If this relationship with my wife continues to deteriorate I'll definintly need to be finding a new spot on the planet to call home. Sadly i don't know of any true 60's or 70's fashion communes. But I am looking.

you can always get a bunch of people togather, go in on a piece of land, and start one.
that's what people had to do then.
joining someone esle's that already exists pretty much means volunteering for slave labour, unless its people you already know,
that or sitting around starving, which can get to be a real drag too, no matter how doped up you are.
