And so it begins! Did them tonight on my own. I separated my hair into about 100 tiny parts and started backcombing and twisting. Here's what I got. I feel like they should be separated out more. I dunno...maybe it's just me.

What do you guys think? Is there a way I can separate it more? I'm not using wax, just oils and residue free shampoo. My goal is to do as little damage as possible to my hair in this process.

Any tips or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Dreads Are Formed By Friction Between Dry, Oil Free Hair, Ditch The Oil...:).

No oils at all even later?

    I haven't used any yet.

They'll become more pronounced and separated looking as they mature :) There's gonna be a fair bit of loose hair over the next year or som but it will eventually all come together.

As for tips. Keep 'em clean and rip as you feel necessary. All there is :)

    100! thats lots :D

id also keep away from oils until your dreads are more mature; at the mo just focus on keeping your scalp clean & healthy :)

    A few more pics.

Haven't washed just yet. Only rinsed yesterday.

Should I backcomb them all through again or just leave them? I keep feeling paranoid that they won't lock if I don't keep them all big and backcombed. I like them like they are, I just wanna make sure I do it right.

Every Time You Backcomb You Reset

The Dreading Process Back To Day One...:(.

Backcomb Once, Then Keep Ya Bloody Hands Off Them, And Carry On With

Life As If Nothing Ever Happened...:).

    Newborn Dreads...:baby:

yeah. your dreads *will* loosen and 'fall out' and stuff for the first few months - try not to panic or whatever, its just how it works. theyll lock right back up by themselves :)

There's not really a wrong way to do it.

All I do with mine is tear them apart now and then when they start to dread into each other.

Just give it time, they will lock up nicely.

So, hairs starting to feel dirty even though I was gonna wait a week. Now I may wash them today. Good idea? Or should I hold out?

I was gonna do a baking soda wash for my first dread washing. Anyone recommend otherwise?

    Wash it up!

Besides not conditioning, I've pretty much have done the same thing before my hair was knotted up. Feels dirty then why not.

And baking soda would be fine.

100 all by urself , mustve been hard to separate the back! i had ppl separating the back and backcombing half my dreads. Must hurt ur arms doing all unless u did over a week lol I think i have about 55 dreads and my hair was straight thick and about 3cm sections. Was expecting to do more

It was. But I separated and rubber banded them each tight at the root before starting.

Took me a good 3 hours for that part alone.

So, washed my hair in Mira's Organic Sunflower Seed Shampoo last night and it seems to have softened my hair a little too much. The back is still locking alright, but the sides seem to have been having more trouble locking up and this shampoo certainly didn't help the process.

I think I'm going to stick to the baking soda until I can order my Dr. Bronner's.

BTW, I watched the documentary on Netflix of Dr. Bronner and it's soooo amazing. Definitely threw out any hesitation on using his shampoo.

Also, quick question...is there anything I can put on my hair or in with the baking soda when cleaning my baby dreads to make them not smell so much like...baking soda? hah. I've always had a think about the smell of my hair and the baking soda is just not that pleasant.

When you say oils, do you mean essential oils or liquid fat oils?
I wash my hair with baking soda with couple drops of clary sage essential oil- it helps with oily hair :)
    They look awesome!!!

Essential oils. I've never heard of anyone using fat oils on their hair. lol
