So yeah. I've been having this problem for so long that its starting to get at me.

So setting the stage: i will be doing the average dream scape boogie, ya know like hunting a big-foot in an apartment store when i see someone (doesn't matter who its just anyone that seem to be doing something wrong) and I'll go and confront this person and end up in a fight and will not be able to land anything but a glancing blow or a really soft tap where I barely touch them.

I have been wondering if anyone else understands this?

also it seems to happen when im thinking about how im fighting. when i dont think i can destroy somebody.

The same thing happens to me. Whenever i go to hit anyone in a dream my arms become really heavy and i can barely move. I end up just barely touching them. It's very bothersome. Also similarly ill start to feel very heavy sometimes and all of my movements are slowed down. It happens randomly but almost whenever I'm in a fight in a dream it happens. Weird shit.

I've had the same thing happen to me, except it's a life or death situation (or so it seemed) and I'm flailing with a knife that hardly made any wounds.

    has happened to me too.

i think it's because we are actually trying to punch in our sleep. moving your hands and arms around i mean. obviously it's not gonna be very strong or accurate, so that's why it's weak in the dream.

i actually woke up once from punching the wall next to my bed.

I think this happens to most people.
Punches are about as effective as punching a great white in the face underwater.
Knees and elbows seem to work fine. =p

Yea, i have had a couple dreams like that. I always end up in a life or death situation that i have to fight or flight. I usually end up fighting but i can never really hit the person or do damage to them if i do hit them.

I did some soul searching and some meditation and i think i found out at least the reason why i can't hit someone in my dreams. I think it is because, i don't really wanna cause anyone harm in my life that when i have to fight in my dreams my true peaceful nature kicks in. (Not saying i don't fight because i actually practice MMA and fight in the ring but that is not against someone who is not willing and understands they can get hurt)

Here's my theory. Now there is a chemical that is released to "lock" your muscles during sleep. So you're not actually trying to punch with your fist... and if you do, that is actually a disorder that is quite dangerous

Anyways, there is something in dreams that is a fact, with dream control. One way to make a dream longer, is to change it, change it by changing the scenery. So with lucid dreaming, one can look at a clock, then look away, and look back at that clock, and in the dream world it will NEVER be the same. Some dream theorists used this, to alter their dreamworld, if you were to spin in your dream, like spinning in circles, once you stop, the world will be new. This is a tactic to change the dream world.

So getting back to the point, I think this fighting thing is "too much" for the brain to handle, it is too detailed to keep the dream consistent. Another idea is that your registering that you're fighting something that you wouldn't in real life, so you wake your self up. Your mind is blocking you because it was shocked awake. The dream cycle is very delicate, and can easily be broken. Dreaming is like your bodies natural meditation, and when that trance is broken, awoken, you lose it.

or you're TRYING to move your arms, but can't because of the "locked" muscles that lotus just mentioned. so you're trying to act out your dream in your bed, you can't, so you can't punch in the dream...makes sense to me

Wow. I have not thought about it like that. I am, at the heart of me, a peaceful person. Although, being in the army I tend to be a little combative on the surface. I can see that my subconscious could take over and divert my mental energy. It is an interesting concept and I need to search myself more on the subject.

If anyone else has a thought on the current topic I would appreciate your thoughts.

yea you could do some meditation and find the root of all your dreams easily through that. Try it sometime and hopefully it helps with your dreams

The same thing happens to me whenever I try fighting in my dreams and same with my friend. You try and punch as hard as you can but it has absolutely no power to it

On a separate thought, has anyone ever experienced sleep paralysis? It's when you're mind wakes up but your body doesn't. It's pretty well documented, but even knowing what's happening it's scary as shit. I've had it happen several times throughout my life, never on any regular basis. It's one of the most horrible feelings I've ever experienced. You open your eyes and you can see and think and are awake, but you're completely paralyzed. I had it happen once while sleeping in class in high school and I remember being so terrified that I tried to scream but I was unable. I had to really think hard about moving my finger for a minute or so until I could get myself out of it. Sorry to jack the thread but I thought it might be interesting and sort of along the same lines.

Same Happens To Me, When I Throw A Punch Or Wrestle With

Someone, No Matter How Angry I Am, And How Hard I Hit Them

The Punch Has No Force To It...:(.

Then When They Take Off And I Attempt To Chase Them I

Will Encounter Some Small Incline In The Road And I

Will Grind To A Halt With A Pain In My Leg.

Then I Wake Up With A Very Painful Leg Cramp...:(.

    Cheers Glen.

I actually have had these dreams all my life. It started in the form of being held down by the telekentic force of a concious moon. The moon tried to get me to do horrible things as if I were it's evil minion. If I refused I was unable to get up. If I did as the moon instructed I was given the ability to shift into the form of slimer from the ghostbusters and fly. (I was little at this time.)

As I grew older I began having the exact same dreams as everyone else describes here. Except, I don't think it's because I can't move my arms in my sleep. So far, due to these sort of dreams I have wound up choking my girlfriend and I have thrown her acrossed the bed. (Yes, this scared the crap out of her and I both as you can well imagine.) I speak and move in my sleep.

Personally I believe the inability to harm someone in my dreams to be due to the fact that I have a low self-esteem. (I might as well be brave enough to admit it.) I have on very rare occasions successfully won fights in my dreams as well as killed others. (When I have killed I always have an extreme sense of guilt and fear. When I wake up the memory of the dreams pretty much ruins my whole day.)

Yea i have had a couple dreams throughout my life that could considered to be sleep paralysis. Usually mind involves me feeling a something staring at me in my room. I try to look around or try to open my eyes but i usually end up not doing anything but trembling in fear. I did some meditation after it happened a couple times and it seemed that it was at least to me something that laid deep inside of me that was trying to hold me back from achieving my goals. It was the same as skeeter basically a rather low self esteem that caused me so somewhat hate myself. I worked on it for a long time and since then i have yet to have it...

However i since we are talking about other dreams has anyone else been dreaming and feel like they are being sucked back into reality from their dream. Almost every dream i have (that is not a lucid dream) i always end up feeling like i am being sucked back into my body then i awaken in a complete shocked state and sit right up. It usually scares my girlfriend half to death cause i usually sit up rather quickly and make a deep breath noise. Anyone else have those kinds of dreams?

Yes sir, I've been sucked back to reality as well. Only in the good dreams though. So, what was it that you did to finally boost the esteem and get rid of those dreams buddha?

I haven't had it, but yeah I know about it, it's one of the scary side factors of dreaming. As I said in an early post how your body "locks" your muscles, it is possible to wake up while you are still locked, and be unable to move while you are awake. As long as you understand that's what's happening you should be able to relax more. It's more scary than dangerous from what I've heard.
