I posted a picture of myself online. I was wearing a leather jacket. I got some comments like "Oh that animal skin coat is disgusting!" and stuff like that.... I think these comments are a bit over dramatic and come from an uninformed and ignorant perspective. But, I don't like to make people angry. So now I feel reluctant to wear the leather because I know it might push some people's buttons. I'm even thinking about selling the coat, just because I don't want that negative energy. It's a great coat though. It'll probably last decades of I take care of it. What do you think? Is leather evil?
I love my aviator. FUCK people who have a problem with it. I ASSUME something worthwhile is done with the meat from cows used for leather, it's not like farming foxes or something just for fur, and flimsy fur at that. I'm not vegetarian or super animal "rights", I like animals and wouldn't kill one for no reason, but the reason we're not hairless bonobo's and accomplish things is by using other animals as tools, if you think about it that's what seperates humans from other great apes. Otherwise, shit, these things are smarter than some people I've met, and generally very similar to us in every way. Cool as they are, I'm not a bonobo, and as such, eat meat and wear the skins of others if I need.
I used to HATE the SMELL of leather with a PASSION. Now I just dislike it... it's better than bleach I knew a VEGAN girl that wore leather boots. She caught me looking at them all puzzled like She told me she got them at a thrift store so it was all good. She wasn't supporting the leather industry, just the more sustainable resale industry. The point you ask... we set our own ethical boundaries.
Selling the coat is unlikely to bring the cow back to life, so wear your coat and forget the haters. The leather was likely a by product of rendering the animal for food, anyway. When we raised beef cows, it wasn't like the option ever came up that we could sell for leather or food, it was a package deal. We had to pay to have them butchered, and if they were interested in purchasing the hides, they'd purchase them, and if they weren't, they weren't. I can't imagine anyone raising cattle on the off chance their hides might be leather worthy.
I wouldn't be caught dead in my Doc Martins, flannel, fashionably ripped jeans, and tool shirt without my Leather jacket!
Who said? I think tuesday was spot on, we set our own boundaries. I'm not vegetarian, and I enjoy meat, but I also like animals and dislike animal suffering, and I don't eat meat anywhere near every meal, or daily, or even weekly. I can't see that utilizing an animal that's already dead and second hand to boot (see wut I did there) in a thrift store is going to do anything other than make that animal's sacrifice as useful as possible. If you'd rather the parts of an already dead animal be thrown out, you sound considerably less sincere than someone who doesn't want to waste quality, durable, already existing animal products.
Send all those idiots who gave you shit about your coat back 100 years to Montana in December and I'll bet they would be killing and skinning the first fury thing they find. Vegan mentality is asinine and completely goes contrary to the survival and progress of the human species. Humans are omnivores, plain and simple and no amount of crying and protesting will change that fact. If humans were not omnivores then there is a very good chance we never would have evolved and developed to a point that someone could cry and bitch about what materials another person wears or what they eat.
Leather's awesome. People on the Internet just like to put others down and feel bigger. Just like why people watch reality TV.
Then they all might as well commit suicide right now. I'll bet it is virtually impossible to live in modern society today without using and benefiting from animal based products in any way shape or form. Plus it would be completely impossible to survive in a non-modernized society without making use of animal products. As I said, that mentality is asinine.
I understand the perplexity of to leather or not- I have been vegetarian and wore a leather jacket I inherited. I and understand both points of view. In a perfect world animals would be happy little creatures never hunted or used but in our world that doesn't exist. When it comes to leather do what you want and if someone has a problem with that then it's not their decision-it's yours. They can say what they want but don't let it get to you.
Well, I'm not a vegetarian, I did used to be, and I had a few leather items from before I went veggie, so I still wore them. But I loooooove the smell of leather, love love love it.
Its kind of wasteful to butcher a cow for meat then throw away the hide because a few bitches have an ethical objection to wearing animals. Its equally wasteful to butcher a cow for its hide and throw away the meat instead of turning that shit into steak and hamburgers. So, in conclusion. If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any leather. How can you have any leather if you don't eat your meat?? Seriously though. In conclusion, as long as people eat meat people will wear leather. And thats okay.
I have a leather jacket that I've worn since I was 12. God knows how it still fits... I'm agains animel cruelty, and I like animals, but lets look at the problem from this perspective: thousands of years ago and even later than that, people used to wear a lot of animal furs and skins. And I truly don't think they went on a killing rampage every winter just to change their clothes, since said clothes would have lasted because they were made from animal skin/fur.
I only use leather boots cuz i work construction and it keeps moisture out, as long as it has steel toes but i don't mind leather at all, i don't wear leather jackets cuz its heavy and makes me sweat like a pig
Leather jacket when I ride and ill wear it out Saturday nights sometimes too. leather boots. We use the critter for food so it would be wasteful to not use the hides. Im against the use of fur however. Modern days fur is just fashion. As thats all you use of the animal its just wasteful. So no I don't hate someone because they wear leather..
