It's just the end of a calendar.
The Mylans had a sophisticated calendar for that time period- . It's related to the wobble of the Earth's pole and where the location of sun appears to be with respect to the background stars. . Eventually the sun passes the center of the Milky Way.
Either they figured out something absolutely amazing, using these ancient theories or
maybe they just got tired of doing calanders..?.

I'm not stocking up on canned food and water-the odds that these people got it right cant be too high..I wouldn't quit the day job
