UPDATE 8/26: Japan's Prime Minister has resigned due to the fallout from the government's response to the tsunami and Fukushima nuclear meltdowns.

Japan was hit with an earthquake measuring 8.9, followed by huge, devastating tsunami of up to 7.3 meters (25 feet). The entire Pacific Rim is under a tsunami alert including Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Guam, Marianas, Russia, Indonesia, South America too! More than a dozen aftershocks have hit, many over 6.0.

The damage to Japan is extensive including a huge oil refinery which has blown up!

Warning now extended to Pacific West Coast of USA...

Absolutely AMAZING video footage available on CNN and other news stations.

I was watching it as it happened live. I've never ever seen anything like it. The chopper shots were unbelievable watching the tsunami sweep over the land washing away everything in its path. The scale of the damage is just amazing.

This is very sad. Japan will be devastated economically for years.

The tsunami did most of the damage as the buildings were built to withstand the earthquakes, but nothing can resist the big tsunami.

Tokyo is at a complete standstill. 15 million people cannot move anywhere. Public transport has been shutdown.

Miyagi prefecture has been hit by a 10 meter (30 ft) tsunami now.

It looks like a lot of buildings collapsed and many were on fire.

These things have a tendency to move along fault lines, I wonder if anyone has considered that it could travel round the famous "ring of fire" and hit the east coast of America next.

Scientist have observed this phenomenon recently I think it was in Turkey but that was on a smaller scale. I don't know if this would apply to the ring of fire since it probably consist of a series of fault lines, it seems reasonable to at least consider this. Maybe san Francisco is going to be hit by the "big one".

Someone told me the other day that the moon is moving closer to the earth than it has been since 2005, and that they were predicting seismic activity as a result of it over the next few weeks.

The fault line goes through Tehran..So where in relationship to that fault line did the Iranians build their nucular facilities and are they even designed to withstand an earthquake? Is it just weapons or is there a power plant too? Japan has put a lot of time, reseach and money into earthquake proofing and California has some as well I understand but radiation leaked into the atmosphere can be carried a long ways...

She has aformed rather than informed. But it is seriously a threat for the nuclear plant, and for the actions and reactions of survival.

SHould be bad for the U.S. economy, as after the balance of trade deficit from those regions, too.

I saw something about a nuclear plant in Japan having some trouble, people were worried about it. Anyone know anything about this?
