Some "Refused last meal" while 1 had "Yogurt" listed......

Maybe those who refused thier last meal are the ones that feel guilty and sad about what they have done... Good theory?

Its sad in a way because the people that THEY MURDERED didnt have a choice for a last meal!

Maybe they didn't want to eat because they didn't want to poop their pants or throw up during execution.

The people they murdered DID have a choice of what they ate, they just didn't know it was their last meal.

Nobody knows where the 'last meal' originally comes from. Some believe it's a peace offering and acceptance of the last meal from the inmate is them giving their forgiveness, to the executioner, the judge, etc. Perhaps it makes those that have contributed in the death of the condemned feel a little better about sentencing someone to death.

So maybe those who refused their last meal weren't forgiving for what was about to happen to them. Some inmates not only refuse their 'last meal' but refuse to eat anything in the last day or two before their sentence.

Or perhaps a hearty decent meal wasn't on their mind the day before execution. I'm not sure I'd feel like eating a good meal if I knew I was about to be killed. It's a weird thing to have to anticipate and also something I'll never understand. Hopefully!

Cheeseburgers, fried chicken, Mexican food, and ice cream are very popular.

I guess if I had to pick, though: Wet tripe and shrimp burrito, sashimi, Mexican Coca Cola, flourless chocolate cake, and miso soup.
Shake the dice and steal the rice.

There were quite a few that requested cigarettes which were denied due to prison policy. If the state is going to kill a man...the least they could do is let him/her have a smoke.

I'd want a litre of Wild Turkey.

I wonder if you can send your steak back if they overcook it

I wouldn't eat anything. I get really nervous around needles and would just throw up anyway, so it would be a waste.
Unless it was by firing squad or something like that. Then I'd eat a bacon and onion cheese burger with tomato & mozzarella salad and some diet coke. :)

I believe here in pa you can only order from the officers dinning hall, and some commissary items. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_meal

I would choose my meal based on the method of execution.

if I was getting the chair, I'd go for something hot and spicy.

I know there was a guy who made a point to make his last words "I want it noted that I asked for spaghettios to be my last meal and I was served spaghetti." So, I'm going to go with no... Unless he was just massively passive aggressive and didn't say anything until just then...

budget cuts and the economy: States will be removing the last meal request for inmates. Fair to say they will eat regularly like they always do, and the last meal will be the last. Exceptions will/may be a few items from commissary ie: ice cream, candy bars, amd soda pop. These are not common items for death row inmate. As are restricted from commissary purchases This will be paid by the general inmate welfare fund.

I love the idea of a last meal. I understand where you're coming from, it may not be fair but in some ways it makes death that much more cruel. Death row inmates have nothing to lose at this point; they haven't experienced pleasure in years and all of a sudden they are given one of the most basic yet enjoyable and visceral pleasures of all right before life is taken from them. It serves as a reminder of what they are about to lose. Eating is the very essence of life.

I've actually been toying with the idea of writing a short story about a death row inmate enjoying his last meal. I've researched the subject a little and read somewhere that those who proclaim their innocence until the end are more likely to refuse a last meal or request something very spare and those who seem proud of their crimes are likely to order something hearty or decadent.
I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love - J.R.R Tolkien
