A man who witnesses said stabbed and beheaded his seat mate on a Greyhound bus in Canada made his first court appearance Friday, while police offered no motive for the savage attack against a 22-year-old carnival worker.

Li, accused in the beheading of a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus in Manitoba, has been charged with second-degree murder. (AP Photo/James Turner, Winnipeg Free Press via The Canadian Press)

Vince Weiguang Li, 40, of Edmonton, Alberta, was charged with second-degree murder, an indication police don't think the attack was premeditated. He shuffled into the courtroom Friday in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba with his head bowed and feet shackled.
Li, whose face was bruised and one hand bandaged, did not reply when the judge asked him whether he was going to get a lawyer, and only nodded slightly when asked whether he was exercising his right not to speak. He was not required to enter a plea.

The prosecutor asked for a psychiatric assessment, but the judge said he wanted to give Li a chance to meet with his lawyer. Li's next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Li, who worked as a newspaper carrier in Edmonton, has no known criminal record.
Li's employer, Vincent Augert, told the Edmonton Journal that Li had delivered papers until Monday. He said that Li told him recently that he had a job interview in Winnipeg. Augert said Li's immediate supervisor described him as a "nice guy."

Authorities have not released the victim's name but friends identified him as Tim McLean and said he was headed to Winnipeg after working with the carnival in Edmonton.

William Caron, 23, said McLean was quiet, though he liked to socialize with friends. He was small - about 5-foot-4 and 130 pounds - and tended to stay away from a fight, Caron said.

"All the time I've known Tim, he's never been the type of guy to get into a fight with. He always kept to himself when there's strangers around," Caron

    said.

Friends started a Facebook group called "R.I.P. Tim" after news of the attack.

"He was a great person, he was kind, thoughtful, and he did not deserve this. I feel for his parents and sisters and his lil bro," Jossiee Kehleer wrote

    on the site.

Passengers said the victim was stabbed dozens of times Wednesday night aboard the bus as it traveled a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway about 12 miles from Portage La Prairie.

Witnesses described a grisly killing that occurred as some passenger were napping and others watching "The Legend of Zorro" on television screens inside the bus. Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said there were 37 passengers on the bus at the time.

Shortly after passengers reboarded following a break, the suspect - for no apparent reason - stabbed the man sitting next to him several dozen times as others fled in horror, witnesses said. He then severed the man's head, displayed it and began hacking at the body.

Garnet Caton, who was sitting just one seat in front of them, said the suspect had been on the bus about an hour. He initially did not sit near the victim but changed seats after a rest stop. Caton said he did not hear the two speak to each other before the attack.

"We heard this bloodcurdling scream and turned around, and the guy was standing up, stabbing this guy repeatedly," Caton said.

Caton watched in horror as blood sprayed across the back of the bus, he told The Globe & Mail daily.

"He had a Rambo, hunting knife covered in blood and he just kept going at the guy," Caton said. "He was very calmly killing the guy and the other guy was screaming bloody murder," he added.

"There was no rage or anything. He was just like a robot stabbing the guy," Caton said.

Caton said the driver stopped the bus when he became aware of the attack and passengers raced off. A short while later, Caton said he re-boarded along with the bus driver and a trucker who had stopped to see what was happening.

He said the suspect had the victim on the floor of the bus and "was cutting his head off" with a large hunting knife.

The attacker turned toward them and the three men quickly left the bus, blocking the door as the attacker slashed at them through an opening. Caton said the driver disabled the vehicle after the attacker tried to drive it away.

As the three guarded the door with a crow bar and a hammer, the attacker went back to the body and calmly came to the front of the bus to show off the head, Caton said.

Everybody I know has been talking about this the past couple of days.

It's just really fucked up :(

I still can't believe out of all of those people not one person tried to help the poor guy, I mean come on it's one guy with a knife I'm pretty sure two guys could have easily got it away from him. Bunch of cowards.

The thing said that there were 37 people on the bus. That means that there were 35 people who could have helped subdue the guy with the knife. What a horrible way to die.

That is really messed up, I hope they don't put him in like a psychiatric holding cell, that guy deserves to rot in prison at the very least.

I dunno about those people being cowards though, I mean sure if I had seen a man pulling out a knife and I had enough time to react, I would definitely help out. But this guy just started stabbing this guy right in the neck. I'd say after 2 stabs in the neck, you're dying. Plus it wasn't a butter knife that this guy had, it was a huge freaking rambo hunting knife! And it's obvious the suspect is not mentally stable, one wrong move towards him could have risked the lives of others (not to mention yourself), I mean they didn't know at the time if he had more weapons on him or not. You're telling me that you would risk yourself and others getting killed to try and save a dead body?

I wouldn't say they were being cowardly, it's just something they probably weren't prepared to deal with, plus being in the heat of the moment is a lot different than just thinking about what you would do. I'd say it's unjust to call these people cowards.

Yeah a hammer and a crowbar against some crazy psycho lunatic who may be wired with explosives or packin' some heat! Believe me, I'm all for bashin' this guy's brains in or giving him an incredibly inhumane death; I think he should at least be killed in the same way he murdered that kid, it's justice. But not at the risk of anybody else's life.

    i agree with johnny tsunami

apparently he was already dead before anyone had time to do anything. plus the shock you would get if you turned around and saw blood spraying across the bus, you wouldn't immediately think about attacking that guy

still thats really fucked up. glad he didn't get away

wouldn't you think they'd have you walk through a metal dector or ANYTHING to get on a bus like this? i've never taken a bus more than 5 miles to a local festival, but i'd think that its common sense (with all the terrorist attacks happening), that you'd have to go through atleast SOME type of security to prevent this (or something even more horrible like an attack with a gun) from happening.

    le sigh.

you guys don't have any idea what Canada is like (specifically the prairies). The bus stop he got on was in the middle of nowhere...sometimes you get on greyhounds outside of mcdonalds or tim hortons since there isn't a station since its not practical to have one.

I'll also add that this kind of attack could have happened ANYWHERE. They could have been in a bar, in a theater, etc. It is very fucked up to hear about something like this though.

I'm glad this tragic incident is getting some media notice. LGBTQ folks are beaten and murdered more often than is reported. Also, it's about time we started focusing more on the violence happening here in Canada and the USA. If we cannot keep our citizens safe closer to home, then I don't get what gives us the right to come up with solutions far away from where we live and die. Just my two cents.
