This seems the wrong place, but hear me out. It seems to me that professional wrestling is in reality Soap operas for guys. What do you think? It has the same silly story lines except in end in the fighting except in the tears and music.
If you really want to have a cultured opinion you should widen your horizons a little bit. It's a very serious sport in other countries such as Japan and Mexico and "storylines" are focused very little on. I guess if you're on the internet you have access to youtube, if you got time i'd look into things like AJPW, NJPW, and AAA and if you want to see what it can [and should] be like in America check out ROH. All of those federations will be very, very, very different from what you see on American Tv [just assuming thats what you're watching although I guess the WWF is shown all over over the world] It is really crazy to see how things differ when comparing these things, one is a billion dollar entertainment industry and the others are legitimate showcases of athletic ability. [ I do believe that all of it is athletic though don't get me wrong, but there are major differences in everything from styles to crowd reaction.] If you're not looking for people getting thrown onto glass and and using glass light tubes and nails and barbed wire I'd stay away from IWA-Mid south, IWA japan, BJPW, and FMW as those are all pretty much straight blood baths. Although if you got a strong stomach that stuff is just as incredible in terms of pure passion, although it really makes you scratch your head. I guess in the end I just realized where this was posted and a lot of the things I am talkinga bout are not on tv so this may be completely off-topic but still doesn't hurt to know that it exists for anyone who feels strongly enough to make a topic about it.
Comic books are closer to soap operas for guys this is said by a DEVOUT green lantern reader, I also have been known to watch GH, OLTL, and AMC
I agree with you, thread starter. I don't know about other wrestling federations but the WWE is full of crappy story lines and fake drama. I try to watch it sometimes but its just crap, pure crap.
it is a soap opera in a way, but it's something the fans take very seriosuly I was a huge fan when I was younger in the old school attitude days, with guys like Rock, and Stone Cold, while I'm not really a fan now I can tell you that wrestling fans are not stupid rednecks, and they come from all walks of life. They are a very savy and loyal fanbase. You go see a movie or a play and no one says oh that's not real. It's the same thing with wrestling 99% of fans know it's all a story but they enjoy it anyway
Well yeah, that's mostly the case for WWE and general televised wrestling. The melodrama is a cheap and easy way to get the audience interested in these wrestlers and their disputes.
Not true, but during the 1980s during the days of Tito Santana, Honky Tonk Man, The Iron Sheik, Ravishing Rick Rude, The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, Jimmy Superfly Snuka, Ricky The Dragon Steamboat, The Ultimate Warrior, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, and Hulk Hogan, there was one wrestler (whose name escapes me at the moment) in the WWF who acted like fairy but could really kick ass Hotwater

Been a wreatling fan my whole life. Even when I learned it was scripted I kept liking it because of the athleticism involved and some good story lines. I just recently started watching NJPW and has become my fav company. Shinsuke Nakamura is so awesome

Speaking of Jimmy Snuka I saw him wrestle in a rec center gym in front of like 20 people. Rowdy Piper and Doink The Clown too. I think Doink lived around my area because I saw him often. It was the original Doink too, I know the gimmick has been used by a lot of wrestlers. Once the WWE is done with you it's not like you can get a normal job but you still got bills. They probably got paid a tiny fraction of what they made in the WWE days but they took pictures with every little kid and adult who came up to them.
I've never really watched it and I don't understand the popularity. Though I do have to laugh at the guys who are referenced as "such a year champion" like, they think they're really a world champion when it's scripted or something. I'll never understand the popularity. Or how there can be some many dickheads.
The Iron Sheik is a legendary badass. He was a body guard for the King,President, or whatever the guy was called in Iraq or Iran. (sorry don't remember the details) The entire WWF at the time was actually affraid of him because he could take you apart for real. Then came Ken Shamrock "The Most Dangerous Man On The Planet", again legendary OG UFC fighter. Thems just a couple there were others
