Ok...if history happened in the past then why do we have to learn about it during school?? I mean, seriously, it's done-it's over with. And if history repeats itself why can't we learn it when it repeats?? I just had to say this...I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this...

Because many things in the past should be learned about so that they aren't repeated ever again. i love history and learning what the world was like hundreds and thousands of years ago.

But how would you know it was repeating if you didn't know what came before?

also, history helps you understand what's going on in the world today. All the problems and hatred in the world didn't develop over night, and if you know why and how things came to be the way they are then you can try and work to create a solution fair to all parties.

i'm out of high school working to save money for college.

and i don't know it's reapeating...i only know like the major stuff that happened so I think I can figure out if it is.

i don't really care about working on a solution fair to all parties...i say let 'em figure it out or learn to put aside their differences and get over themselves.

That is the way many people feel and that is why the world is still so shitty. If you take a look an ancient history you see all the nations that where huge crumble under their own weight because of corruption and so many other things.

the problem is that not many people really want to know about history that is why things keep repeating.

When you go to college you will have to take at least 1 history class and I can tell you some really good fun classes to take as history was my minor. One of my fav. classes was sex and society in early modern Europe. It was a great class.

We need history because without it I would have no job! (I teach high school history)

No but really, I think a lot of people have already given some great answers that I would say myself so I wont repeat any of it.

You just need a great history teacher. I've had some really good ones who wont even use the text books because they are written one sided and biased towards what the government wants you to think.

Ever hear of a book called Lies My Teacher Told Me? I read it pretty fast, but do seem to remember they said teachers don't like to teach "Modern History" ... the history of about the last hundred years ... somehow the classes just END before you get to that point in history ... it's easy to concentrate on stuff like the Civil War ... too long ...

History is very interesting in its own right, but some things are more exciting than others. There must be at least one period of history that interests you, right? I like mostly all of it, be it art history, political history, military history... but OK, economical history is kinda boring.

Learn about the victories of great Soviet Russia over the Third Reich bastards, or about the struggles of indigenous America against European colonialism, or the glory and discipline of the old Roman Republic in contrast to the decadence of the Imperial period. It's all awesome to read and know about.

I don't really care about the 'repeating aspect' of history (and think we can break the cycle with some collective effort), I just like it because it's more interesting than the present time, which I despise. :)

No matter how much time we spend learning about the past, there will always be ignorant politicians that will make us repeat it.

after learning to communicate clearly, history is the most important area of study.
True, many high school level instructors are dead boring, but EVERYTHING has history.
Read about the history of theater, see how theater/ film react to movements socially and in the governments.
Look at the arts in the most oppressed times and think WHY the human heart and mind reach in such conditions.

not caring is a huge cop out, and you get what you deserve.

Did you know MDMA was legal in the US 1985?
Did you know that a series of acts in the 1910s set the stage for plays to be suppressed? And that we still use them in the US to quell dissent, or even ideas the powers that be do not like?
