Is there anyone who actually understands what is going on in the David Lynch movies Mulholland Drive or Lost Highway? Or any other David Lynch movie? Or are they not supposed to make sense at all, and are just supposed to fuck with your mind?

i heard that for his new film he wrote the script as he shot it, day by day. I think Mulholland Drive is largely about Lynch thumbing his nose to all the people who demand meaning from art. Haven't seen it for a while so I can't define...he writes with archetypes and the subconscious, so his films are sort of like oracles when you try to decipher meaning...

They kind of freak me out, they definitely stir up something inside me, although I can't quite put my finger on it.

Anyway, they're intruging in their own way, and they definitely leave some lasting impressions afterwards.

Yes, if you happen to view the behind-the-scenes story, it might help in understanding the films of Lynch. I had to watch Mulholland Drive three times to finally get it.

    Hi,
I've often been likened to the "Elephant man" except i don't believe in god and shit like that like he did..Oh, and i have a personality similar to that of "Eraserhead" but ppl think its more like Ted Bundy's.

Also huge fan of David Lynch and believe his movies are representational or suggestive rather than literal. Don't try to overanalyse, I find, and they are easy to understand...

yeah if you think Muholland Drive is fucked up have you seen Eraserhead? I agree with Mary Poppins above but also have heard that he tells conventional stories in an unconventional way. Basic themes are filtered through his fucked up conscious

By reading the last post, he sure seems fucked up..Maybe i have more in common with the director rather than the characters in his films.haha...I wonder if his fans are called "The Lynch Mob"?.

'Friends' took me to see Mulhooland Drive - apparently to see myself -

the girl (as in child) who innocently walks through the world wide eyed and opened mouth, taken in by a smiling face; staying silent in her pain (perceived pain); who is taken in by the game between a man and another woman and completely embarressed (i wasn't because this was their perceptionof me - not who i am); and who in her pain kills herself, and the movie reflects her life leading to the moment of pulling the trigger.

It told me more about my 'freinds' than it did of Lynch's insights...

Guess ill be the one to bring up dune!
I thought it was interesting. Even though people consider me crazy for liking it. Yea i can definitely point out all the flaws, and how goofy it all is, i mean... a floating fat man? Are you serious? But thats why I thought it was good. Crap like that.
I saw blue velvet. It was pretty neat too. And im hoping to find some way to see eraserhead and mullhulland drive someday too. Never got to see extended edition of dune yet.

I think what he sees in human interactions and attempts to show is that "all is not as it seems." Or "nothing is ever as it it seems." Ever.

Also, doesn't he try to stir up strong emotions in his viewers? Thought it was more about that than a story as such. He's making music now which is quite dark and moody, again emotion based, has anyone listened to it? what are your thoughts?

i had a friend who i guess had schizophrenia who became obsessed with the movie mulholland drive and ended up committing suicide because she believed david lynch was sending her messages thru the movie and that he wanted her to lynch herself so she hung herself. she was an engineer and everyone thought she was normal. this is a true story.

Christ Eavesdrop that is such a strange and morbid story.Really fucked up if you'll excuse my French.I found the movie Mulholland Drive pretty disturbing but then I have quite a strong stomach.Movies can affect you in pretty far out ways though, but that story is just beyond the beyond.

generally speaking, no form of mainstream entertainment makes a great deal of sense.

being gratifyingly entertained, is a much more uniquely individual sort of thing.
