Hey I need some advice/help

Ok, my wife and I live in Vermont, we've both agreed on moving from here sometime in the next 2 years, we are both from Virginia. She is all hype about living somewhere on the beach in the southeast, I hate the southeast, and we keep getting into arguments over this, I would prefer to go to the West Coast, however i'm trying to have some maturity and understanding about her idea, see I have had a very bad experience in the south, I got busted there, and spent 4 years in a VA penitentiary, I associate the south with being ultra-conservative, republican, and redneck.........I feel like I would be really out of place there. In my mind it's a place full of ignorant people, and not many people like me, this of course is what I believe in my own mind, I no longer know if this is true or not, as i've built it up as a demonic place in my own mind and I realize that, I have not hung out in the south since the mid 90's when I was a kid, as soon as I was old enough to, I went on tour and started traveling, and it was on a brief return stint in VA that I got set up by some locals that I trusted. I really don't know whats what anymore with that place, as i've said i've demonized it in my own mind, now does anybody have any suggestions as to enlightened liberal communities in the south? Or at least a place with a respectable population of likeminded people? Is it really as bad as I remember? What states? What areas? Any and all input would be appreciated. Namaste.

the south is not all bad. I have lived all over the coast of both north and south carolina. As a matter of fact, I was incarcerated in North Carolina back in the late 70s and it really turned me off to North Carolina for quite a while. Anyhow, Places you might consider that are pretty cool in my opinion, which may not be worth jack shit, but here goes.

Wilmington north carolina. In the south east corner of the state, has pretty beaches, wrightsville beach, carolina beach. both pretty cool. Also has a 4 year college that keeps a young hip crowd all over town. There are good roads, easy interstate access, and a strong business community and solid economy. I lived there 7 years and met tons of very cool people who I still consider friends.

Myrtle Beach Sc is also a nice place. Lots of pretty beaches and parks and plenty of nite life, and lots of young people. A bit expensive, but just move inland 10-15 miles to conway, or south to garden city or surfside beach, all of which are close to myrtle, but actually, Myrtle beach has grown by leaps and bounds since I lived there, there is life there year round now and plenty of money in the city

If you wanted a small town life, look at shallotte nc. The southern most city in NC on highway 17. Its only 30-40 minutes to myrtle beach and 30-40 minutes back up to wilmington. East of shalotte there are 3 barrier islands where I made a living for several years, holden beach, ocean isle beach and sunset beach, all very nice and not over built.

I dont know what else to tell ya, but to me, wilmington is the best of them and I will be spending alot of time there this summer. Hope something I said helps ya to decide. Maybe you should go spend a couple weeks scoping out some places? Get a feel for them
