What is a hipster?

Now we just need a magazine - "Today's Hipster" - so we can stay on the forefront of hipster ideas (and be bombarded with advertisements directed at hipsters).

A hipster is someone who:

Listens to indie music (only)....and indie music is usually awful.
Has a penchant for handlebar mustaches ( they look better....or less awful on male hipsters).
Rides a bicycle with no gears....and usually pushes it.
Wears what they call "skinnyjeans"
If it's ugly they like it.
If it's fashionable they hate it.
Wears big ol toques that make them look like an overgrown elf.

When I hear this I picture one of those bongo players wearing that beret and snapping their fingers and going crazy man crazy. They like coffee don't they? And France?

You seem to be describing a beatnik. And I'm much more beatnik than hipster or hippy.

I guess the long hair is optional. Lots of beards I think. Genre wise, they listen to everything but there should be old stuff mixed in for good measure. Vintage stuff.

Beards and pics of him ^ doesn't scream hipster to me. He just looks Amish. Hipster is definitely more goofy. Mismatched colors and just rediculous outfits. A bit tripped out and needa lay off the gear type folks.

 

Which category utilizes the man-bun? Hey I'm old OK, I don't know this stuff.......
