Um, no. That would be people like Brian Eno, Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze, Terry Riley, Manuel Gottsching and Tangerine Dream and countless others in the early and mid 70s. Ambient was already pretty damn developed by the time the 80s rolled around.
I really like bands like Mogwai and explosions in the sky... they’re kind of ambient to me. But probably not what people looking for “nature” sounds would think is ambient!
