Two evenings ago, for the first time in many weeks, I stripped down and soaked in the hot tub in my apartment complex. Healthwise, that's not nearly as risky as it might sound. I live in Phoenix, after all. Even at midnight and later, the temperature stays above sixty-five. As for the water in the hot tub, our maintenance crew had finally taken an hour off picking their noses to fix the heating system. When I showed up, wrapped in my towel, it was so hot that I could see the steam rising off the surface. I soaked for about an hour, dipping in and out, having a fine old time. I felt my skin prickle slightly in the night air, but since it felt rather like a rush, I gave myself up to the experience. I went to bed feeling refreshed, vivified, and not too disturbed at having stewed myself in what was largely other people's pee. Of course, I got my comeuppance, as I should have known I would. Yesterday I woke up with a sore throat, and the taste of catarrh very present in my mouth. I spent today totally goofed out with a fever of more than 100. Typing this now, I feel like I'm carrying a baby kangaroo in my sinuses. So, please, all my fellow ass-barers: take care. Don't give your body too much in the way of heat and cold when the season's changing. Or if you must, at least bring a blanket big enough to cover all of you.
