I watched http://www.qi.com/tv/ last night.. and it mentioned something about Robin hood not being a person at all .. just a metaphor about the clothing industry at the time .. i think it was about the dye and clothing used at the time.. i can't seem to find anything about this ..anybody able to enlighten me.. this is a random request
Every society needs its heros, if Robin Hood wasnt real then stories of different people probably got rolled into one to create him. As a side note, Sherwood Forrest is a 10 minute drive from my house
omg, that sounds like the best show ever. like connections. that's a great shows on the science channel.
It is a pretty good 'show' mynameiskc check out the link ... you will find very interesting 'stuff'... even more interesting than yahoo *giggles* Did everybody miss the point that this dude might not even be one or two people AT ALL ... I know the commonly held view he was either one person or a collection of differing historical figures.. Maybe i was a little unclear, this chap may have NEVER been in existence. It might be that he was just a selling point to the 'rag trade' and a metaphor..lets say like Ronald Mcdonald..merely a figure to epitomise the vertues of the 'rag trade' ..... QI dispells commonly held opinions thats part of the fun of the programme ... It was said that far from being 'steal from the rich , give to the poor' it might have been 'please buy our goods' as this will make you part of the middle classes . Robins clothing has always been viewed as green ..but this was not the popular colour at the time , it was a red 'ish' colour ... The people that produced these clothing and the dye for the clothing needed a 'hero' to sell what they produced..so created a person to sell this too the public.. It might not have been a person [at all] maybe just a motto that got humanised over time.. We spoke a bit 'funny' during that time 'Hood' was spelt and meant something else it had a differing meaning and came from a differing origin [maybe latin].. I admit this is confusing..thats why i ask....
From your link could loosely be described as a comedy panel quiz. However, none of the stellar line-up of comedians is expected to be able to answer any questions, and if anyone ends up with a positive score, they can be very happy with their performance. Points are awarded for being interesting or funny (and, very occasionally, right) From Wikipedia – everything you could ever want to know about the subject http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Hood Based on reading both of the above I think you had your leg pulled. Or would you say “they had you on a bit” or probably not my knowledge of other folks slang is not that good (grin)
The panel are asked these type of questions and asked to respond.. yes it is filled with 'funny people' but thats just because it is not meant to be seriouse ..it is a light hearted show and you actually get mocked and lose points if you spout out ''Robin hood came from Nottingham'' thats one of the points of the show.. You would lose points if you said anything within that link..i checked out that also hopeing to find what was mentioned in the show. i also hoped http://www.qi.com/talk/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=3c0e1d34cff179d799734de74d693e2b would help... nope.. not yet. No.. i don't believe so.. it is a funny show but its 'facts' are based on truth..it might not be the truth we all think.. but thats actually the point of the programme.. It is QI that what we all think is not always correct.
Another thing that was mentioned.. once upon a time people were put in hot metal shoes and forced to dance till theay died.. i only have a vague recollection of what was said.. but think about it.. have you EVER heard that before ?... It is all QI
there was this japanese show that did the same sort of thing as QI, really, what they did was amusingly test urban legend. it's was something like Hey! Spring of Trivia. awesome stuff....i really liked the giant rubber band test...
You have ??.. well there are gaps in all of knowledge.. i know things you don't and vice versa. I think Grimms tales are watered down storys and legends about the times they were told.. elements of the truth wih a huge doses of fantasy. The original Red riding hood is VERY different to the one that was told by the original story tellers.. I bet thats a story about something other than not going in the woods alone. Do you have a very powerful satelite dish..or was it aired on ... sorry i am loseing my vision gonna have to sort it out..
the Robin Hood legend has been changed over the centuries too; Originally his name was Rasta Hood (some sources say Robin Head) He lived in ShareWeed forest with Little Jah, Friar Toke, maid Mary Jane, and all the Mariquana Men. And his nemisis was the sherrif of Narcingham (some sources say "Notinmy backyardingHam).
I have heard a bit about this.. i think they were appossing ja rule and trying to get 50 cent for some soap and bread..
There go the NEOCONS trying to rewrite history again! No, Robin Hood wasn't about stealing from the rich & giving to the poor. Nobody would EVER do something like that! Especially not Republicans! They're too busy STEALING from the Poor, and enriching their off-shore bank accounts! Perhaps that was what Robin Hood was all about in the first place. It just got perverted by some lefty liberals! Yup! I think it was made up by the left-wing media of the time. After all can you provide a URL to the original Robin Hood story? Huh? And who was the original source for that story, huh? Probably some SherWOOD journalist (no doubt named WOODward, wrote that fairy tale. I'm sure it was based on a rumor spread by a shadowy figure named DeepWOOD. Or was it a story planted in the Sherwood media by a close advisor to the Sheriff of Nottingham? Fearing that the serfs were getting a bit too angry about their high taxes, much of which were being wasted in the ongoing war in far-off Scotland, they used the tale of Robin Hood to pass ever more restrictive laws, taking away what little freedoms the serfs had left. Soon they couldn't even carry a knife with them, as the Sheriff's security staff would search them whenever they entered the city. Paranoia gripped the region as the Sheriff's men would attack and kill anyone who fit the description of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. And since they were just mythical figures, they could basically kill anyone and get away with it. Afterwards they would say "We killed him because he was acting a bit too Merry." Robin Hood became a symbol of all that was wrong with the world. A new enemy to fight, one who seemingly could never be caught, escaping deep into Sherwood forest whenever the Sheriff's elite horsemen would catch his trail. They used this tale of Robin Hood to continue their rape of the poor people, while the Sheriff and his cronies got richer and richer. No Viginia, there is no Robin Hood, just greedy rich people isolated in their fortresses, conducting distant wars, keeping the people paranoid and unquestioning. Same as it ever was...
Let's not forget that Robin Hood & his merry men, were actually COMMUNISTS. They lived together, ate together, stole together. They wanted to overthrow the rich and powerful and give everything they owned to the poor people. No wonder the neocons are afraid of this story. It's what people like Hugo Chavez are doing today. Hugo Chavez IS a modern day Robin Hood, but the neocon media would never spin the story that way. So let's put to rest this Robin Hood story because we all know there's NOTHING wrong with being filthy rich, while people in your own country are living on the streets, the poverty rate increases each year, and the rest of the world no longer thinks of America as "the land of the free", or the "greatest country on earth". Yup Robin Hood was all about fashion! Just like hippies! They were just fashion rebels who wore too colorful clothes. There was no agenda or confrontation with authority. Those are just lies told by liberals. Everything is just fine in Bushitland!
Hmmm...now that you mention it Skip, if robin Hood realy had existed and if he really was into ripping off the fat cats and distributing his take to the masses wouldn't that, in the long run, just make things that much harder for the poor? Taxes would go up, commodities would become scarce and more expensive(due to the increased overhead to the merchants who'd have to find alternate trade routes and charge higher prices for their goods to compensate for being ripped off), poaching would become harder to get away with due to the increased police presence,... What I'm saying is whether Robin Hood was the real thing or just, as you were outlining, an excuse used by the people in power to up the obression of the masses, looks like the poor would wind up getting screwed either way (like you say, same as it ever was).
