Just one of the four Occupy DC hunger strikers who went on a hunger strike to advocate for D.C. voting rights continues to fast, protesters said today.

Occupy DC media organizer Sam Jewler – who, along with protesters Kelly Mears and Joe Gray, stopped eating Dec. 8 – broke his fast Monday. He said his parents were "getting more and more distressed" and asked him to stop.

"My parents were fighting pretty hard, so I felt like I should stop," he said. His first meal after the fast consisted of coconut water, hummus and miso broth. Strikers Kelly Mears and Joe Gray dropped out last week and earlier this week, respectively, citing health problems.

Hunger striker Adrian Parsons continues to refuse food. He was arrested last week at a D.C. Vote rally and was denied water for six hours, Jewler said, but is "doing fine."

Jewler says the group isn't done advocating for voting rights, budget autonomy and legislative autonomy in D.C. and plans to circulate a petiton nationwide on the issue.

"Adrian's still going – there's still pressure," he said. "We want to push those petitions far and wide, and we're looking at different, creative ways to get community involved."

Occupy DC Planning Major January Demonstration

As the Occupy movement heads into its fourth month in the District, protesters are preparing for a major demonstration on Capitol Hill in mid-January.

Dubbed "Occupy Congress," the planned Jan. 17 protest bears some similarities to Take Back the Capital, a labor union-backed protest that included a camp out on the National Mall in early December. But this protest has been embraced by Occupy DC, which has taken the lead in organizing it and plans to host thousands of protesters who they said would converge on D.C. on the day Congress returns to work.

Occupiers want to tell Congress that "our elected officials are no longer representing the people" and protest the prevalence of money in politics, said participant Mario Lozada of Philadelphia. Participants plan to host sit-ins at congressional offices and are applying for a permit that would allow up to 10,000 people to march on the Capitol.

This 2012 "State of the 99%" response to the State of the Union will be delivered by a group of Occupiers assembled outside in a well-lit spot at McPherson Square following the conclusion of the President's State of the Union address and/or the Tea Party response. The presentation will unfold this way: one participant will begin in the center/front of the group, in the middle of the camera frame, surrounded by the others. That person will deliver the first line of the speech, and will then be echoed by the People's Mic. That person will then read their second line, and as the People's Mic echoes the second line, that person will move off to the side and rejoin the group, while another person will step into the center spot to read the next two lines, with each line again echoed by the People's Mic. This will continue, cycling through the crowd, with each person reading two lines and being echoed by the People's Mic.

We are men and women of the 99 percent
Many of us have spent many months at Occupy Wall Street

But sometimes the one percent, on Wall Street and in Washington, need a reminder

Financially, the state of the 99% is not strong

That is an understatement.

Never in our lifetimes have so many hard-working Americans
Faced so many difficulties, so many uncertainties, so many indignities

In Occupy camps around the country
We find Americans from all walks of life

Some of us have had it rougher than others
And it turns out living in camps is no picnic either

When our courts tell us corporations have more right to speak than we the people do

That's not democracy.

When pepper spray and midnight raids make a joke of the 1st Amendment right to assemble.

That's not democracy.

When defrauding clients, blowing up our economy, forging thousands of documents and seizing people’s homes illegally is not a crime
but protesting all that is a crime

That's not democracy.

Our America is not a democracy, not yet.

We all know why: Wall street owns Washington.
Bribery is legal, and the laws we live by are for sale to the highest bidder

That is why our government serves the very rich and powerful
at the expense of the rest of us

It protects the bonuses of bankers and Wall Street executives,
while failing to keep hard-working families in their homes;

It shields offshore tax havens for the very wealthy,
while letting our bridges, schools, and infrastructure fall apart;

There have been dark periods in our nation's history, when corruption became the norm
when grave injustices stood in the way of America living up to its best ideals.

But time and time again, Americans stepped up to take back their government and correct our course.

Today Occupy Wall Street and the 99% movement step into this proud American tradition.

But fear not, one percent!
We are not here just to help the 99% at your expense.

We are here to help you too.
For when you've begun to think rigging the game is fair game

When you regard hard-working Americans as undeserving of a middle-class life
and unworthy of the profit their own work creates

Man Sick of Occupy D.C. Tries to Cut Down Big Tent, Fails

About 3:30 p.m., a scissors-wielding vigilante approached the tent and started cutting the strings anchoring the tarp to the circular fence that surrounds the statue's base.
"This is my city," the Examiner's Aubrey Whelan reported the man exclaimed while sawing through the rope.
The rope-cutter, who has not been identified, slashed four of the tent's anchoring strings before being surrounded by protesters on one side and Park Police officers on the other, Sara Shaw, a member of Occupy D.C. said in a phone interview. The man was then led away to a police car

On February 9th through February 11th, a who’s who of dastardly politicians will be holding the Conservative Political Action Conference at the Marriot Wardman Park Hotel at 2660 Woodley Road, NW. Similar to the Alfalfa Club dinner, this event is another gathering of bigots, media mouthpieces, corrupt politicians, and their 1 percent elite puppet masters.

CPAC will parade and attempt to perpetuate the radical right wing’s imperialist ideologies with keynote speakers, movies and banquets dedicated to pursuing its racist, sexist, patriarchal and exploitative agenda.

Spectacles will include imperialist topics such as “From Fidel to Chavez: How Do We Stop the Resurgence of Socialism in Latin America?”, “Is the ‘Arab Spring’ Good or Bad for America?” and frequent bloviation on “American exceptionalism.” Openly racist discourses will be given on “The Failure of Multiculturalism: How the pursuit of diversity is weakening the American Identity” and “Islamic Law in America: How the Obama Justice Department Is Selling Us Out.” The conference will also glorify the role of money in politics in talks such as “How to Raise Money… the Easy Way,” “Citizens United Productions Hosts Blogger Briefing” and “Fundraising Secrets from the Billion $ Man.”

There will also be a discussion entitled “Taking Back Wall Street: The Tea Party vs. Occupy Wall Street,” in which they plan to hear only from Tea Partiers.

Our Mission: Occupy CPAC. Create as much non-violent resistance as possible, and make this a conference the attendees will never forget.

We will be joining in solidarity with the AFL-CIO, SEIU, National Nurses United, Metro Labor Council, OurDC, and more to make our voices heard in our increasingly top-down, money-corrupted democracy. Protesters Arrested outside Monsanto

Occupy DC said 12 of its members were arrested Wednesday while protesting outside the offices of agriculture giant Monsanto as part of a national day to "shut down the corporations."

The group was protesting in solidarity with Occupy Portland, which called for a national day of action to shut down corporations with ties to the American Legislative Exchange Council. According to Occupy Portland's Call to Action statement, ALEC "is a prime example of the way corporations buy off legislators and craft legislation that serves the interests of corporations and not people."

Protesters chanted phrases including "Monsanto and ALEC, corporations are making us sick." Some protesters were holding signs reading, “Stop Corporations.”

Occupier Brian Eister said the group arrived at the building around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday. He said the group chose to protest outside of Monsanto, the agriculture and biotechnological giant that protesters said "is doing more to make a sustainable world impossible than almost any corporation on the planet."

Occupy protesters will bring full-service kitchen to McPherson Square

As expected, members of the Freedom Plaza Occupy camp began packing up their tents this week to move north to the encampment in McPherson Square, after the two long-separate groups agreed last week to unify.

“It’s a thrilling moment for us,” said Tighe Barry, 50, a D.C. activist associated with the Freedom Plaza group. “We’ve been trying to combine the two camps for a long time, and I think we’re better off together than apart.”

The neighbors, however, are not thrilled that more bodies and tents will be descending on McPherson just as Park Service has begun its spring spruce-up of the park, where $8,000 worth of sod was ruined by the long protest.

They were also dismayed to learn that Freedom Plaza Occupiers plan on bringing their two large canvas military tents with them, including the one that can operate as a full-service kitchen. During the four months that Occupiers lived at McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement, neighbors complained for weeks about noise, trash and rats.

The federally-owned parks were cleared of overnight campers in early February, although the protesters were allowed to keep some symbolic “vigil” tents. In recent days, the McPherson Square protesters have taken to sleeping on the sidewalks outside Bank of America and other bank branches downtown, what they’ve dubbed a “sleepful” protest.

“McPherson Square was neither designed nor intended for such long term protest purposes,” Richard H. Bradley, the executive director of the DowntownDC business improvement district, wrote in an e-mail. Allowing services that are “inconsistent with park use . . . is problematic both for other park users and for the businesses in the area,” Bradley said.

Carol B. Johnson, the spokeswoman for the National Mall and Memorial Parks, said that Park Service officials are discussing with Freedom Plaza protesters the possibility of transferring its current permit — that allows an ongoing protest to “advocate for economic and social justice” on the plaza near the White House — to McPherson Square.

They will be able to serve hot meals once the permit is transferred and they complete Park Service paperwork that allows for a “temporary food establishment,” Johnson said. The current permit also provides for a 5,500-watt portable generator and propane tank.

Armando Trull was on the scene Tuesday morning as Occupy DC attempted to block the eviction of a woman in Northeast D.C. whose landlord lost the house on foreclosure. No arrests were made, but one protester was taken away in an ambulance and a U.S. Marshal sustained a head injury trying to tear down a barricade.

Pulled up a stairwell by his throat? This is not alright.

No one was arrested, but two people were taken to the hospital. A U.S. Marshal was hit in the head by a piece of falling debris. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. A protester was also taken to the hospital.

"He was pulled up a stairwell by his throat and he ended up unconscious on the pavement," said Vick.

Both the Marshal and the protester were treated at the hospital and released.

DC March To Protect Women's Rights

Thursday, the House of Representatives will vote on their version of the Violence Against Women Act, which excludes protections for Native American women. Native women are more likely to be victims of violence than any other ethnic group in the United States. This is unacceptable.

We will be marching and round dancing in front of the House of Representatives to demand justice and safety for our sisters. 10AM on Thursday February 28, 2013, starting at the Capitol South metro station. Please join us.
