My son developed anxiety over the last several years. He has driven for 16 years but he now has anxiety driving; especially on the interstate.

Did he have a crash or close call?

Really scary shit can happen on the freeway, and you don't have the same ability to pull over that you do on normal roads.

It can be sort of claustrophobic, when you can't stop, can't get off, might be going the wrong way, can't do anything about it but try to catch an exit, might get lost and end up going the wrong way when you do....

Freeways are not what I meant by "new road". They're the sort of road I'd much rather know, or have a really good idea where I'm going and what it'll look like.

I've whittled down zen Buddhism to one central maxim: "Everything's alright",or at least we should pretend it is even if we know it isn't.

    Take deep breaths.

Be thankful of what you have.

Think of those that love you.

(I have a severe panic attack disorder for which I take a large amount of benzodiazepines. It's a terrible trap but there's nothing else I can do.I wouldn't recommend anyone go down this route if they can possibly avoid it.)

    I strongly disagree.

Nothing is alright, and nothing is all-wrong, either.

Everything just is, and must be accepted.

At least, when you need it for coping reasons. Pretending something is a different way introduces it's own damaging thought-patterns - acceptance is the name of the game, you can't change your situation until you can accept it.

If you said it's alright when things are not alright, I would agree with that.

Someone should tell redstarthefrog that frogs have a cloaca, and as such, no need of penis pills.

In my opinion a lot of life is a confidence bluff.I've long been unable to accept the reality of my situation.I'll try every trick in the book to try and win.I have a hard time watching this shit, let alone accepting it.Of course you are right,I'm just to far into this game.

It blows about your panic attacks but those three points are good things to live by, or at least try to.

This reminds me of an old co worker. When I was 18 I started a job and it required driving people around in a manual van, I had only been there a little while (and had only just started learning to drive manual in an old run about at home) and we had to go out in the evening and my co worker said, well you have to drive because I'm really anxious driving and can't turn right. Turns out most places she travelled she took routes where she could avoid right hand turns.

It was good for me to get over my manual driving fears but it was an interesting drive that night.

Yeah, I really try to avoid benzos. I have a script for klonopin but only take them once in a while. Probably once or twice per month.

I'm speaking to no one specific right now. I'm just thinking about how I feel when people tell me about themselves.

Maybe telling people about your anxiety would relieve it a little. I feel like people would be understanding and check to make sure you feel okay in different situations.

Maybe instead of being anxious about trying to appear un-anxious, you'd just feel enough stress relieved to actually start feeling better.

went to doctor.. sucks.. 100miles there... 100back...

coming home it was pouring rain the entire time. Its a highway with one lane on each side and its a major trucking route... was cruising along and went around a corner and came to a train of vehicles... think it was 15.. needless to say I was hungry and didn't want to buy food... so I popped the clutch dropped it into gear(s) and got around every vehicle in 3 passes. Not what some would call smart... but I trust myself to make the right choices and the rest of the way home it was me and the highway alone.

    4 runnin!
